Hello,
I just got new rig:) with bfg 8800GTX OC2 version, (626mhz core/1000mhz memory)
At default settings I'm having serious artifacts in some games and system hangs:mad: .
also the card running VERY hot, 70C at idle, 84C at full load.

When downclocked to 600mhz core, 950mhz memory everything is fine and no artifacts. 78C at full load.

I'm running lastest official forceware 158.22.
any suggestions?
can it be bad card?

thanks,
Alex

84C @ load isn't too hot for a GTX, so looks like your card can not withstand its clocks, RMA it.

take out the stock cooler and clean it up, then put some AS5 on it.

As already said, 84 degrees isnt that hot for a 8800GTX in fact a lot of my old cards have run at them sorts of temps and above.

DO NOT touch the cooler, RMA the card and get a new one, it's unlikely reducing heat will clean up the artifacts and even if it does, tinkering with the cooler will likely void any warrenty on the card and should you need to RMA it in the future because artifacts are still there, they may notice and refuse a refund.

Thanks

Just contacted bfg's tech support, after sending them shot of my bios showing the rails voltages are normal they suggested me RMA :( .

too bad I don't have some other card to able to use my computer while I'll get replace.

Alex.

I agree with everyone whos advising your to RMA it. It's a card that comes pre-overclocked. It's guaranteed to run at the stock clock speeds that BFG set for the card. If it doesn't work correctly without downclocking it, and you are getting reasonable temperatures with it then there is no reason why you shouldn't RMA it.

this sucks. I feel real bad for you. I was looking into getting an OC2 due to the out of the box aggressive overclock and cheaper price to boot over other manufacturers but now I am not so sure. In the back of my mind I have always wondered about high out of the box overclocks actually being stable, especially in the dead of summer which is upon us where temps will always be higher.

RMA it. My OC2 runs rock stable at 60 Idle, ~80 load, though I do have 2 140mm fans blowing directly on it :D.

The bulk of factory overclocked cards are fine. You just need to have decent cooling and you shouldn't have any problems.

You might be able to sweet talk the BFG reps into paying for next day air to ship it to them and ship a new one back.

I am having the same issues with my XFX 8800GTX XXX.

I down clocked it to stock 8800gtx speeds and it still has issues with blank screen and such.

I guess ill contact xfx

Sounds like you definitely need an RMA.

That temp is too hot.

My GTXs never run over 72 in full 3D load, and idle at 58C.

Sounds like the OC2 is Too much.
BFG should send you a new one before you send back the old one, so you have something in the meantime.

Magoo, what's your room temp?

I'm not quite sure how you've reached this conclusion. Anything above 80C is still hot but within tolerance. 90C is the thermal slowdown threshold. Your computer obviously runs cooler than the original poster's machine, but that doesn't mean that his temps are out of whack. Sometimes the BFG quality control guys make a mistake and the overclocked card is not capable of maintaining those overclocked speeds in all normal conditions. That would qualify for an RMA. If his machine was running to hot because he kept it too hot in the house then that is his fault. He would be operating that card outside of the guidelines set by the manufacturer of the card.

As far as RMA'ing and cross-shipping is concerned, BFG and no other manufacturer make any guarantees about quick RMA's and they also don't give a crap if you are out of a gaming rig for a few days. If you are concerned about such things you should buy fully built systems from Dell or another system builder that offers warranties that guarantee parts within a specific time frame. Four hour response time contracts do exist and can be purchased for commercial workstations and servers for an additional fee.

As for him using the card in the meantime, that's not always the best idea but in this case it should be fine due to the card operating correctly at standard 8800GTX clock frequencies. Though BFG is under no obligation to allow him to use the card while an RMA is pending.

Heh I'm sure they will happily send me another before I'll ship mine. :p

BFG has a great repuatation for customer service, which is one of the main reasons I buy their cards every chance I get. Their great build quality is a nice plus, too. :D

However, I doubt that they will send you a new one before you even ship your old one to them. Too much for them to lose. Most likely, once you can give them proof that you have shipped your package (such as an email from a carrier or an active tracking number), then they will cross-ship with you. Odds are you may have your new card before your package even reaches BFG. Regardless of the circumstances, you can be assured that they will take good care of you. Their customer service and courtesy are top-notch!
