8800GTX Newbie - Performance issues?

Hi guys,

Just joined the 8800GTX club in MSI flavour. Running an X2 5000+ with it.

I loaded up my copy of Far Cry v1.4, and set everything to max. But even with AA only at MS8x (AF at 16x), frame rates can tank to under 20fps when I'm outdoors, especially with dense foliage and when I'm zooming through the sniper scope. And this is only at 1280x1024.

When I turn AA off, it jumps back up to a minimum of around 45fps, which is acceptable.

I thought that this card would be able to annihilate any older game with max settings at 1280x1024.

Are my figures about what you'd expect for my circumstances? My system gives me just over 10k on 3DM06.

Thanks for any feedback.

did you uninstall old drivers, clean with driver cleaner, and reinstall when you got the new card?

I didn't clean with Driver Cleaner. I'll give that a try now, but somehow I don't think it will make a difference.

Thanks.

I just recently reinstalled Farcry on my computer, and I remember going through a tweakguide (@tweakguides.com I think). If I remember correctly the editor said that v1.4 caused some weird graphical glitches and slowdowns. He said 1.33 is a better patch to install if you are only concerned with the single player aspect of the game; you should only install 1.4 if you are going to play online. I hope that helps.

I found what I was writing about. Go here:

Thanks for that.

I just found the culprit - transparency AA. When I turned on super sampling transparency AA, the frame rate tanks. I guess this is understandable due to the massive amount of transparent textures on-screen (foliage). Turning it off produces high frame rates, even with everything else at max.

However, transparency AA does make the game look a lot better!

i haven't found too many games that play nice with transparency supersampling :/
