I've got a EK waterblock on the way for the GTX covery the ram and processor. Does anyone know of a guide to removing the stock HSF assembly? Going to go search it myself. Could not find anything on [H] doing a walkthrough of the removal process.

It's straightforward... Just turn the GTX so you see the back, remove all the screws (make sure you don't lose them by putting in a small container) then twist the cooler till it separate.

After this, clean all the chips with artic cleaner or isoprophyl alcohol to remove thermal pads residue.

 
I have 2 questions. Does this work on the 8800 ultra? and will this cooler conflict with other PCI slots because of size?
 
Yeah I've just heard of idiots ripping off memory or the gpu by not doing it correctly. I've also heard doing this with a warm card (run it for 15 minutes) or use of a Hair Dryer helps ease the HSF off.

Luckily I will be doing this to my 8800GTX that is not in use atm, so if I fook it up I can at least send it to EVGA for fixing! :)
 
Room temperature is fine. I've never had a problem with a video card heatsink before, it's only chipset heatsinks where I've ever had to use a bit of force to get it off.

Just remove the screws and gently wiggle it off, if you have to force it, just stop and re-evaluate.
 
bump, I don't feel like making a thread just for this.

Yes, a GTX and Ultra is identical. Only the gpu and memory speeds is different (Ultra being clocked higher with better silicon).

I just put a DangerDen cooler on an 8800 GTX, removing the stock heatsink was a breeze.
You wont believe the gunk thats under there. The TIM on the GPU was about 1/2 an inch thick.....eeeeek. Make sure you have some ArcticClean or Isopropyl alcohol to clean the memory and GPU with. DangerDen has a tutiorial about this on their website,btw.
From my research, the EK block is much thicker than the DD and wont allow you to capture the PCI slot below or above it.
I chose the DD because it is thin enough to make the otherwise double-wide GTX into a single slot solution so I could use the PCI slot directly below for a sound card.

A thing I did learn about these WC blocks.....they're heavy.
Second, dont tighten the attachment screws too tight or you'll warp the PCB.
 
Thanks for some good advice I do see on the card that the screws are not torqued down just snugged. I probably will take a picture before doing the change to capture the approximate tightness that is currently on the card.

Thats good news, I looked into 8800 gtx/ultra coolers and the ones I found obstructed the path of any other pci devices below it, this other cooler is good news.
