..it's 263 at Microcenter, and right now I'm dealing with 2 7900gs KO's in SLI (I play most games at 1680x1050...)

Is the upgrade worth it, keeping in mind the new cards coming out soon?? I'm thinking the step up program may come in handy...

cpu is an X2 3800+ / 2gigs 6400

Thanks for the help.

Is it Evga? If so ya. If its not Evga might not want to bother though as its the 320mb card and you will probably want more ram for the newer games.

Yep, it's eVGA.. The ram was one of my concerns.. dealing w/512 now, and then stepping down to 320.. I wondered if I'd take a performance hit due to the GPU speed increase not being that much over the 2 7900's. Cool though, I'm gonna go for it..

I own the eVGA 8800GTS 320 Superclocked version. Worth it. It does run a bit hot though.

Single GPU card, I get 3dMark06 = 11,077 (if synthectic benchmarks mean anything to ya) :)

More memory comes in handy when you're pushing super-high resolutions with large displays. The 320 is fine for me with a 20" LCD @ 1680x1050

Also you will be able to use evgas step-up program if you find you need a card with more memory

The memory is also used by high quality textures, which some games require 400mb+ for textures.

i returned my 320MB card for a 640MB card. At the time the price difference was only $60 so i figured why the hell not. To date i've noticed no performance gain going from 320MB to 640MB (i'm @ 1680x1050) and damn near every benchmark for games i'm interested in show these cards at identical performance. In hindsight it was probably not necessary as i will more than likely stepup when the new cards arrive anyway. The 320MB is a kickass card and at that price you can't go wrong. congrats on the new purchase. :)

That's correct, but all you have to do is turn down the video settings in the game. :) You sacrifice something for the savings in $$$.

If the GTS 320 can perform better than the higher end 8800's, then there would be no market for them.

For price/performance, the 8800GTS 320 SC is a bargain (only $10 more than the regular clocked ones)

Oh I do agree that its priced very nicely for its performance, just see a lot of people saying how its only high resolutions that use the memory. Textures do use it, and a lot of the newer games are using 400+ now for the max settings.

Hey guys, just a quick update and another quick question...

So I got the 8800GTS SC, and I'm loving it.. Thanks so much for the advice on the purchase.. easily worth it at the 263 I paid for it..

I've been tinkering w/overclocking since i'm getting an X2 BE 5000+ soon, so for a reference, I dl'ed 2dmark2k6 basic, and did a quick run of that on stock settings.. got around 8600.. (didn't write it down), so I started oc'ing the CPU using the guide in the AMD CPU forum, and got it up to 2.6 ghz.. it's stable on air cooling, and haven't pushed it past there for now.. Next I downloaded rivatuner, and started OC'ing the already overclocked card, and right now i'm at 610 for the core, and 920 for the mem.. scored 9091 marks.. Question is, is that decent at all? I have no reference point because I've been out of the OC'ing/Benchmarking game for a while.. Just want to know if I'm on the right track, or if there's some more tweaking needed..

Thanks again!

J

It would be easier to judge if you could post the SM 2.0 and 3.0 scores.

Dont forget to register within 30 days of having bought it to retain your lifetime warranty. Also, be sure to keep the receipt because you will need it if you want to RMA or Stepup. If you want to stepup in the future make sure you keep as many original parts from the box as possible.

An 8800GTS of any type will severely trounce 7900GT SLI cards. I owned that setup. 6000-7000 3dmark06 with the 7900GT cards and about 10,000 with the 8800GTS.

Your 7900GS SLI vs. an 8800GTS is no contest. Just do it. You might even get a few bucks back from selling the old cards.

Getting out of sli and into a single 8800 was one of the best video card upgrade experiences I've ever had. I'm not ever going back as long as one card will do what I want.

SM 2.0 : 4366
SM 3.0 : 4445

~ Russian : I'll make sure to do that.. Your company is easily the best around as far as performance and customer support.. thanks!

~ Advil : You're speakin' nothing but the truth.. I love this card!

scores are good.

I have a superclocked evga 640mb, running at 626/1100 stable, and I have not bothered to try any higher.
