I just installed my new 8800GTS 640mb and had a blast playing all my games on the highest setting possible (crysis mmmm). I started playing CS:S and after about an hour my computer just straight shut off no warning no bsod, nothing. So I turned it back on and went back to sleep a little while later, when I woke up in the morning my computer was off...So I turned it back on and went to work, when I came back it was off..again. I turned it back on and played cs:s for about 20min when it shut off...so I turned it back on did some stuff (non game) and went to sleep, low and behold when I woke up it was off.

Never had this problem before so I have to assume its the new card or possibly a problem with my psu? I thought for sure 600w was enough to power my system and this card am I wrong?

Thanks for any help.

It wouldn't have anything to do with what your PSU is capable of; it has plenty of power. However, if your PSU is failing, you could experience something similar to what you're expressing right now. Have you checked that all fans in your case (including the PSU fan) are running, and that your temperatures are in check?

Ideally, borrow someone else's PSU and test it out.

The fan on the psu is running and I never had a problem with temps in my case since I have 3 120's circulating the air and my cpu is water cooled. I havent checked the temps on my cpu though...I think that could cause this if it was overheating. But that would be strange since its only started happening directly after installing this new card..maybe I got a defective one.

Those cards do run really hot and could be the cause of overheating. Are you using the stock GPU cooler on it? Might need to get a better after market one like the Thermalright.

There is no need to switch to aftermarket cooling to keep temperatures of a stock card down. At most, I would suggest reseating the stock HSF, but there is no need in this situation. Because these issues occur even when viewing the desktop, it seems that something else is the culprit. It could be something wrong with the video card (as he mentioned it started after it was installed) but more than likely I think it's the PSU.

OP: I would check out a borrowed PSU.

Yeah I did notice its running 56c idle, I will have to graph it out when I get home to see it at max load. But still it should be fine stock.

I agree. the 8800 run really hot regardless of the system you have. Although it would seem 3 120's and watercooling would easily cool it. hmm.. definitely seems like checking the temps would be a good idea.

i was having the same problem and it turned out to be temp moniter software, asus probe. i know u wouldn't have this installed. the thresholds for the software were reading incorrectly so it would power off my comp. and when i would start it up again there would be no windows shut down incorrectly or anything like that. so i started but shutting down all running appz and for me asus probe was the guilty one, so if u have any kind temp monitering software running maybe try shutting it off and seeing if it still happens.

and btw it was same thing i would wake up in the moring and my comp would be off.

Wow that was scary, I just got home and checked my CPU temps... 80c!!!! at idle. My fucking pump wasent pushing any water!

DDC-3.2 w/Petra's top is an excellent choice. Otherwise I would grab the MCP-655 with the vario speed control. Either would be top-notch.
