Greetings. Is 320MB going to be enough to game with my resolution of 1440x900?

A little background... I am finally building a new computer after 4 years of the same PC. Here is what I am looking at getting from a high level.

EVGA 680i MB
Intel Core 2 Duo 6600
2 GB DDR2 800
EVGA Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB (Superclocked)

Here is what I am currently using

Intel MB (Abit I think)
P4 2.6ghz HT
2GB DDR 400
Geforce 6800 GS 256MB

I am on a budget, so keep that in mind. However, I don't want to pay money for something I will not be happy with.

So, my question is this... Given my native resolution of 1440x900, is the 8800 320 (superclocked) a good choice for gaming (WoW, EQ2, Vanguard, Oblivion, etc), or should I spend more and go with the 640? I am not planning on using any higher resolution.

Thanks much!

I'm in the same boat as you (looking to build myself a new computer).

From what I've read, the 320 MB version will play all current games great at the 1280 x 1024 resolution. I'm sure that means it also won't have any problem with the widescreen version (1440 x 900).

The question is how well can it play future games at that resolution? No matter what 8800 level card you buy, this will be the question.

How long will my card be able to play games at this resolution?

No one knows any concrete answer but the 640MB is likely to be more "future proof" and will last a little bit longer. Everyone just has to find the price to performance they are comfartable with doing.

There's 2 options that I see.
Spend as much as you're willing to and get the best card in your budget.

Spend just enough to play the current and near future games that you have or will have soon. Then upgrade the card later with the money you saved when you need more power.

i have the evga SC version
i can play all games at max with little to no stutter and stuttering might be because i have 1 GB of ram

Not trying to be a prick but I'm tired of seeing people say things like "it will run games @ 1280x1024". I've been running ALL my games @ 1600x1200 since the 7800GT, any current game you play is going to run great @ 1600x1200, the exception being the newly released Stalker, it runs like arse for some reason. 640MB+ really is only required if running w/ AA on or at higher than 1600x1200, actually a little higher than that even.

I love my eVGA 8800GTS 320MB Superclocked, it's running everything (minus Stalker) great even in Vista. I have it bios modded to run @ 600/1400/1900 too so that helped out a bunch as well. Not like I will keep it forever though, I'll likely step up to at least an 8900GT if they come out soon being I could either Step Up or Ebay this card for the price the new card will be. But ya, this card owns, buy it, you won't be disappointed.

If you think about it, you are paying like $300 for a uber clocked version, sure if you spend $60-$80 more after rebate you could get a 640MB "vanilla" one that will probably actually perform worse than the uber clocked 320megger. Get my point?

Are you absolutely tied to the X6800 and EVGA 680i? you could drop down to an E6700 and a 650i SLI board and have outstandig performance and enough money to get an 8800GTX and still have some money left over..

Actually forget the 650 all together (SLI is lame and unecessary) and get a cheaper board and get a e6600 and overcloak it, 4GB DDR2, and the 8800GTX.
