I know this type of question is asked a lot but please indulge me. My main type of games are RTS, simulation, & sports games but I don't get to upgrade very often based on our family budget. Because of this when I do upgrade I need to make sure it will work for a while.

I'm buying this barebones from tigerdirect.com and need to get a video card to go with it. Looking at newegg I could buy one of these 8800GTS for either 179.99 or 169.99.

Would you guys recommend buy that or getting a 8800GT instead? Or is there something else I'm missing that would be better buy?

Thanks,
LK

I do not recommend you get the barebones -- pay a little more than know everything you're getting. The 650watt PSU is probably an Ultra (TigerDirect house brand, more or less) and that's reason enough to stay away from it.

$220 - Q6600
$40 - 2 GB DDR2-800
$120 - P35 based motherboard (will run cooler and OC higher than the 650i)
$135 (with shipping) - Antec Sonata III case with 500 watt Earthwatts (built by Seasonic) PSU
$70 - 320GB Seagate 7200.11 SATA HDD

Yes, it's more (~$570) but it should last you longer and consists of higher quality components.

I'd recommend you wait until mid June regardless and consider buying someone's second-hand 8800 GTS 512MB when the mad dash to get ATI and Nvidia's newly released cards then starts.

I'd stay clear of that Ultra barebones, too. Really.

I dont agree at all..The barebones system clearly lists everything that he will be getting and the price is not bad at all..especially for the games that the OP will be playing.. Both the GT and the GTS will be fine for what you need.

make sure to drop 30-50 bux for a CPU fan....

i dont see the 8800GTS 512s for 170-180 price you mentioned. cheapest GTS G92 i see on newegg is $209.

i'd go with an 8800GT for 160-190 if youre not willing to wait another month-ish for the new cards to come out. it's a great card for the price.

the PSU is a BFG 650, tho it doesnt list the model im not very familar with BFG PSUs, but i do know they get mixed reviews. some of them are supposedly fantastic, while others are less than mediocre.

i, also, would recommend building your own. you can find the parts listed in the barebones on other sites to close to what tiger has them bundled for. also, tigerdirect gets poor marks from many review sites and individual buyers, including myself. i avoid tigerdirect b/c their rebates never come through and their shipping is pretty slow. i wouldnt trust them to build a machine for me...

do yourself a favor and spend a little extra $ and build yourself.

There are two G92 GTS cards for those prices (after rebate) in his link.

Personally, I think you will be fine with either card for the type of games you are playing. As for future-proofing, I don't think the GTS would give you more longevity than the GT. A future game that's unplayable on the GT isn't going to be playable on the GTS either. If they are the same price, then go for the GTS. Otherwise, you can probably find a GT for $130 or $140 after rebate if you watch the Hot Deals forum.

Except for my very first PC (a Packard Bell in the 90's), I have always built my own. I'm not against it now and would prefer to build my own but I definitely have to squeeze the most out of my $$. I'll look around a bit more and see what I can do. I really need to keep my between 700-800 including buying windows vista ultimate.

As for the 8800GTS those prices are after rebate.

yeah get the 8800gts 512 g92.
It is better then a 8800gt in my eyes and the barebones kit seems like a good deal.I may invest in one myself

8800gt plays all the games out there at high res and visuals.

I'll use this over summer and upgrade to a new card and sell this one. no reason waiting when u can always resale.
