8800gt to a hd4870, my 3dmark06 numbers

Core 2 duo Q6600 stock clocks

Installed a Visiontek HD4870 yesterday, finally took out my 8800GT. Ran some 3Dmarks for each card. (I know everyone says 3dmark06 means nothing..)

8800gt: 12115
hd4870: 12913

Just barely better than my 8800gt.. weird. I got whatever drivers are available on ATI site currently. Suppose I expected a little more when I decided to step up to the 4870 instead of the 4850.

How about you run a game instead of some shit benchmark that means nothing? Do you just watch benchmarks all day instead of playing games?

It is your CPU limiting you. With 2 HD4850's I got a similar score to you with an e8400 at stock, however I clocked the cpu to 3.6 ghz and my score went from 12500 to 18000 and I could even overclock it more if I felt it was important however I went back to stock afterward.

I think most people hate on the 3dmark06 because it's cpu limited which doesn't reflect real games. However, I think most people have to agree that without a solid benchmark like the crysis benchmark, it's hard to compare your results in game.

Such hostility! He wrote that he knows 3Dmark means nothing.

When you said you "expected a little more" I take it you are disappointed in its performance, not that 3Dmark is weird and you don't care that the marks were lower the expected. Am I wrong?

Well he probably wanted to know if there might be something wrong.

And there is, his CPU is clocked too slow.

So he's gotten some good advice for his trouble, no thanks to you.

like everyone else said, 3dmark 06 is not a good tool to use for that type of testing.

Nothing is wrong with his clocks. Games will run great on his setup. 3DMark just prefers higher clocks for its total BS benchmarking system. Something is wrong with his computer if he gives a rip about his "3-D MARKS."

Thanks for the helpful reply. I usually keep my cpu stock, but i have had it to 3ghz at times before. i'll prob try it just for fun on 3dmark06 again, but there arent a lot of new games i play until some new stuff comes out soon. I mostly do TF2 and CS:S and just played through Bioshock for the 10th time. I had Crysis and got tired of it so I'm waiting for some new games now. Always running 1680x1050 or whatever that widescreen resolution is.

i had the 8800gts and scored about 10,050 in 3dmark06.got a 4870 scored about 12,000 in 3dmark06.once you pop in a real game and set it to high res with xaa and xaf on the 4870 shits on the 8800 cards.

Holy shit yes!

*opens up his computer expecting a nice steaming pile from the 4870* :D

hmm.. i do have an aftermarket cooler on it.. i forget which one. one of the top 3 popular ones.. ill try a small overclock soon. I seem to recall not getting over 3ghz last time i tried.

Core 2 QUAD Q6600, should be able to get an easy 3.0 OC on it. You'll be surprised how your score jumps.

OC that Quad if you really want that futuremark # higher.

I'm sitting at about 15k with my quad OC'd to 3.5Ghz, VTek 4870 stock. Probably could hit 16k if I OC'd it.

When I oc'd my 9800GX2, i was hitting mid 17k, with the q66 @ 3.5Ghz.

Yet, the 4870 for me, is the better card. Better playable experience esp at 1920 x 1080 res in games that I play, like SupCom, WiC, AoC, Warhammer, etc.

E8400 @ 4 Ghz
1050 Ram 5-5-5-15
4870 = 15800 3dMarks
8800GTX SC = 13000 3dMarks

My 4870 barely edged out my 8800GTS 512 in 3dmark but in games it is totally different. The 4870 owns my 8800GTS in COD4. I am currently getting 16,309 3dmarks with my overclocked quad @ 3.4ghz and 4870 @ 840/1150.

You sound like I did before. 3dmark 06 its pretty dated and it does better with the older cards. Run 3d Vantage which is up to date and the 4850 beats the 8800GT hands down. I used to think the same way about 3d mark, and like the guy said you don't play 3d mark :) you play games. So fire up some games and then compare. Then you'll see the difference :)

i thought vantage isnt free anymore and only will run once on the demo?

Finally got CCC installed... This thing idles at 77C!! dammit!! and i got a very cool case with a lot of flow.

Setup a fan profile and it will cool down and still be somewhat quiet. Mine did the same thing. Stuck an HR03-GT on it and It idles in the mid 40s with a low rpm 92mm fan.

That about normal, little bit lower on the normal side though. Fan hack ftw.

i been trying to find some instructions on the fan hack. CCC itself doesnt tell you much.

and another note.. now that I clocked my Q6600 to 3ghz (333x9), the 3dmark06 wont even run at all. Says I dont have the supported hardware. So I cant do a comparison with the CPU overclocked.

a simple reboot solved this! running 3dmark06 now with faster cpu.

with 2.4ghz stock q6600 = 12,913 3dmark06

with 3ghz q6600 = 14,416 3dmark06

not great, but decent.

Just to give you an idea of how OCing will effect your score.
With my 4870 set at 790/1100 i ran 06 with stock cpu and with a smal OC

at 3.0 ( stock) i got a score of 13782
at 3.6 ( small OC) i got a score of 15503

almost a 2k difference.

figured out my XML fan profile and set it for 30% fan. My idle went from 77C to 56C. Still can barely hear the fan.

Considering changing this card for dual 4850, havent made up my mind yet.

I agree with him. I went from 8800GTX and I see a ton of difference in every game. I have yet to run 3dmark though.

TF2 seems to be buggy with this card for me. My display res seems to reset everytime i start the game. it always starts at 800x600 after i set it to 1680x1050 every time.

The problem is that 3DMark 06 only runs at 1280x1024 with no AA or AF by default. It has become more of a CPU benchmark than a GPU benchmark.. but it doesn't take advantage of quad-core either - your 2.4 GHz Quad core produces almost the same results as a 2.4 GHz Dual Core. Also the benchmark does seem to favour Nvidia cards.

As you can see here, it's normal that a 4870 is barely faster than an 8800GT in this benchmark:
