8800GT Lockups

Ply, quick question and Happy Thanksgiving by the way. when you overclock the shaders, when you've gone too far are the results the same as when you overclock the memory. Artifacts, lockups, etc. This is the first card I've had where this is an option. Thanks.

I use ATItool and scan for artifacts. When I can go 30mins without artifacts i'm good. Some like to back it down a notch to be safe...

For the others with factory overclocked memory, well, that's one reason I don't like the overclocked cards. Too often there is not enough quality control, and instability shows up. RMA or back off the overclocked settings. As I mentioned earlier the timings for these 1ns Qimonda chips have been tightened for better performance at a lower frequency. If the manufacturer sticks to those timings on overclocked versions of the 8800gt, problems can arrise...

I'm 100% sure its not heat related but is as some others have said a memory issue. I put after market hsfs (ND1s) on my dual 8800gt cards and experience the same problem (artifacts and hard locks).

Lowering my speeds to 625/925 from 650/950 solve this problem. PSU is NOT an issue. I'm considering exchanging these but so far artifacts only appear in Crysis.

The memory is bad, period. The artifacts may only appear in the most graphically intensive game ever, but eventually they will start appearing in other games, even when underclocked. RMA it.

I have a KO, clocked at 675/975 and have yet to see an artifact in Crysis, albeit I am not letting it get to 100c either.

Seems crysis for me will crash a lot when other games ie bioshock run fine.

I have zero issues with my GTS in any other game at nay res (usually 1920x1200),but with Crysis I had to lower my SP oc from 1.45Ghz to 1380~,as it was artifacting within minutes at the previous speeds. Not to mention play @ 14x9 to get smooth FPS and still keep everything on very high/high.

I have a Gigabyte that I had installed for a few hours, and it oc's like a bat out of hell, but its back in the box until I get my other parts.

Guys, I was having the EXACT same problem, play for 30 minutes, it would freeze up with red and blue blocks all over the screen, then I would have to do a hard reset.

SO i took your guys advice, and heres what I did:

Got Riva Tuner, turned the fan up to 100% - Worked for a bit longer, but instead I got same issue but now screen turned completely yellow with blue dots LOL...

Then decided to underclock down to 650 core and 975 on the ram. This worked like a charm.

Now my only question, WTF do I do with this, I bought this card for its full potential, and to be able to OC the heck out of it, and it wont even worked at its factory OC settings!!!! I love the card but Im so pissed. What are all you guys doing...

I have the XFX alpa dog ed. of the 8800gt.

Thanks let me know what I should do....

RMA, you paid for those clocks. Make them keep giving you cards until you get those clocks. What are your clocks suppose to be by the way? Your core is suppose to be 670 Mhz. correect?

Yup, QFT. RMA is a pain but you paid for a stable card at advertised specs...

Yea its the alpha dog Ed. 670 core and like 1900 mem should be the stock clocks.

I really wanna RMA this card too. I called XFX's tech support and told him that there are numerous people having the same issue. And he said theres no way that this would be the problem. His answer was to RMA the card also, but I am mad that they are not acknowledging that this is a serious issue, and there is only 1 fix for it. Which is to nerf the settings on the card which is stupid due to the amount of money that was paid for this card. He completely denied any other people saying they have had this problem. I think its BS.

Anyway, I will RMA this card when I get a chance, thank god XFX's headquarters is like 20 minutes away from my house.....
