I only got my 8800GT on Friday, but today, there have been three occasions on which I had my screen suddenly artifact, then my system locks up. I updated to the 196.something driver, so it's possible that it has something to do with it. My power supply is only 550W, so I was thinking this might be a symptom of not having enough power. It's pretty disconcerting, seeing as the card is so new, so I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on this.

EVGA Superclocked version. Factory OC'd to 650/1900. I haven't messed with the OCing at all.

yeah i have the same problem with my EVGA superclock. I get artifacts and freezes because the video memory is not rated to run at 1900mhz. So I lowered it to 650/1800 and it runs fine but i am sending the card back for RMA.

It is not your psu. I am pretty sure you got bad memory too. Try lowering it to 1800mhz.

It's a heat issue. You need to increase the fan speed from 29% to 45-50%.

I also have an EVGA 8800GT Superclocked. I've overclocked it but sometimes run it stock depending on which game I'm playing. Anyway, the only lockups I've experienced were in Crysis. Even then, I was able to ctrl+alt+del into the task manager and quit the game. There were no artifacts on my screen however, and my temperatures were under 60c. I'm pretty sure it's the Crytek Engine crashing because I was making so many changes to the settings for benchmarks.

Are you guys experiencing lockups in all games, or is it with Crysis? The 8 or so other games I've tried all work fine, but the Crytek Engine crashes on me sometimes.

with my 8800 GTS 320 i use riva tuner to run my fan at 100% during 3d applications running.

i could care less about noise when i have a shooter blasting in my headphones or on my speakers.

when i am just doin regular pc stuff the fan is quiet, and that is when quiet counts.

what i experience is a artifact/crash due to bad v-ram. I have had crytek engine crashes but that is just a software problem.

Seems crysis for me will crash a lot when other games ie bioshock run fine.

Lord of the Rings Online started crashing on me today! This sucks! I just put together a new system.

Asus M2N32-SLI Series Deluxe Motherboard
4gig Corsair Ram
AMD 6000+ AM2 Dual Core
Windows Vista Home Premium

its not your memory, theres no question its fan speed. it defaults very low, increase it to 60% and youll reduce your temps significantly and you shouldnt experience this problem anymore.

I wish that had worked. I tried everything. I think it's on Turbines end.

FYI, Lots of people seem to be using Rivatuner (including myself) to monitor these new 8800GT and adjust the fan speeds with profiles. I came across a strange lockup recently with COD4 having it drop FPS for a couple of secs then lock-up, needing a hard reset after 5-10 mins of play.

Thought it was my chipset/gpu overheating, aka hardware related. Ended up being Riva's monitor process that was bugging with COD4. Disabled it and trouble free since.

You're right, the memory is not rated to run at 1900Mhz., it's rated to run at 2000 Mhz. Also, as the others have said, bumping up the fan speed to 50%-70% is recommended for all 8800GT's, as the default speeds are inadequate. If you're SuperClocked Card can't do the advertised Speed, I'd RMA it for one that can since you paid for one.

Here is quote from HardwareCanucks:

http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/foru...8800gt-512mb-superclocked-edition-review.html

"By removing the heatsink we see that the copper contact plate for the GPU core as well as the thermal pads used for conducting the heat away from the ram modules. Speaking of the ram, it is set up in an 8X64MB pattern for a grand total of 512MB of DDR3 ram. The ram modules themselves are Qimonda HYB18H512321BF-10 modules which are rated at 1Ghz (2Ghz DDR) operation. This should give them quite a bit of overclocking headroom above and beyond what they are rated for."

I highly doubt that this is your problem, but I'll ask anyway. What make and model is your power supply?

It is bad memory like that one guy said. I got an xfx 8800gt that was clocked at 640mhz core and 1900mhz on the first week of release and the very first game i tried was half life 2 lost coast and immediately it crashed. I lowered it to 1800mhz on the memory and it fixed the issue. Its not a heat issue either as i altered the fan speeds to run at 70% in addition I tried a zalman vf900 and max temps were 59c yet it stilled crashed at the default of 1900mhz. Id rma it to get what you paid for.

To add and very important.

These cards vent to the inside of the case (as we all know)

It is VERY important you have good airflow on the FAN side of the card, many cases cause the hot air to re recycle. If you have no case fan on the fan side of the card you may very well have this problem as the card itself acts as a barrier due to its size. You can easily test to get a rough idea, run ATI tool or a game to get max GPU temp, quickly whip the slide off and use your hand to see if the air on the fan side appears hot, or appear hotter than the rest of the case.

The soulution is buy a slot cooler or use a 80mm attached to the case to pull the hot air out at the back..

I knocked my GT top end temps down by 12C and idel down by 4C, just by cable tying a cheap 80mm fan to the case (where the card slots are removing card slot blanking plates) and running it on the 5V so it was very quiet, the improvement was huge.

I agree as I said the same a few posts up....

If you're SuperClocked Card can't do the advertised Speed, I'd RMA it for one that can since you paid for one.

However, other issues should also be considered as well, such as buggy games. For example, my 8800GT with an overclocked core can run Crysis, Bioshock, Quake Wars, and a slew of other older and newer games all night long, and never going above 72c with the fan set at 60%. Yet two of my sons older games brought my 8800GT to it's knee's with artifacting and system lockup. The Games were Star Wars Battlefront II and Ratatouille believe it or not and I managed to fix both of them after a ton of troubleshooting and worrying. I fixed Battlefront II by turning off the "Blooming Effects" left all other settings maxxed. Ratatouille was locking up and artifacting because he was using a shortcut for the Game.exe rather than the Launcher.exe which has the video settings for AF/AA, Screen Res etc. So, never rule out the game as being the cause either.

It could also be driver related. I can oc to 700/1000 and play cod4 and world in conflict for hours. I can even run ati tool and 3dmark06 with no hiccups. Yet when i play less graphically demanding game like source based games it just goes red all over my screen. Some say the card is no volted enough which is causing these errors. Hopefully time will find a solution.

Just to clarify, the memory can run 2ghz with the SPEC timings. Nvidia has tightened these timings for better performance. But the tightened timings reduces overclocking...

From what I understand, simply from what I've read, the cards do have different timings for the ram. You can flash an SCC or KO bios to the SC or Vanilla evga as I've seen and sometimes it works like a charm, others it doesnt. I guess its the luck of the draw like most things.

Agreed, I've been through a few of those cross-flashing posts myself. I also didn't mean to imply by my previous post that all GT's were capable of running at 2 Ghz., just quoting the actual rate speed.

Ply, if that's true, then did Nvidia loosen the memory timings just for the EVGA SCC 8800GT and the Galaxy 8800GT to make them stable? Both of these cards have their memory set at 2Ghz. as the default overclock. Or did EVGA and Galaxy stress test each card produced to make sure they were capable of running overclocked at 2 Ghz. with the tightened Nvidia timings? Or were you referring to overclocking beyond the 2 Ghz. level? Just wanted to clarify what you were clarifying. Thanks. :)

Binning. Note too that bios can change from manufacture to manufacturer. Thus far I have seen four different bios's for the 8800gt.

Also some boards may use a different brand of ram. Nvidia specs Qimonda, but I have seen one board with Samsung chips. The Sammies should clock much better...

Yes I've read a number of post on do they actually Bin the cards or not. I've never read anything conclusive on it though, so I didn't want to make that assumption. As far as the GDDR3 goes, I thought the Qimonda (which use to be Infineon iirc) was pretty high quality stuff. The Samsung chips actually overclock better? Didn't know that. Which 8800GT is using the Samsung Chips by the way, this would be good to know for future discussions on "Which GT Should I Buy". Thanks.

Qimonda is far from the best maker of GDDR3. :) The ram on my GTS 640 isnt rated as high as the Qimonda, but can do near 2100 in a pinch and does not get overly hot doing it.

IIRC Palit may be using Samsung. Also they ditched the Nvidia reference design for their own that uses better three phase power, and their own cooler design...

Correction: It is Zotac that may use the Sammies, not Palit..

No, I read this Techpowerup review of the Zotac when the 8800GTs first hit and they pulled the cooler off this one to expose the Qimonda chips. So maybe it was Palit, guess we don't know for sure so I won't quote you on this. Thanks anyway.

I'm not sure why people make such a big deal out of memory chips. The gains from clocking vRAM 100-200MHz higher are minimal.

Lol, yup especially on this card. Shaders make up the majority improvement. But Some folks just want the fastest I guess...

Agreed, but no one was making a "big deal" about it, we were just discussing it. And if you read through the thread, you'll see the whole conversation started because someone incorrectly said that the 8800GTs GDDR3 is not rated to 1900 Mhz, when in fact it is rated at 2000 Mhz effective. Whether the chips can actually do that, that's was the discussion.

It's a different card from zotac. They have a watercooled edition hitting any day now that uses Samsung chips...

That looks sweet, do they distribute in the US?

Orayn, how are you making out with your problem? We hijaked the hell out of your thread didn't we. My Apologies.

Have you tried Rivatuner yet?

They can do it just fine. Mine runs up to 2100MHz actually. The benefits are negligible though, so imo the brand of RAM chips shouldn't be a big factor in making a buying decision.

I disagree, what you said implies that all 8800GTs can do 2000 Mhz. I do agree however that it's not a "Big" factor, and one shouldn't make their buying decision based solely on memory brand alone. Warranty, Company Rep, Price would all come before that, but it's still a factor nonetheless.

So when I get my 8800GT, its best to see how far the shaders will overclock?

Yup, shaders, core, memory in that order. And make sure the shaders are not linked to the core. On my card keeping the shader/core locked resulted in a lower overclock...

Ply, quick question and Happy Thanksgiving by the way. when you overclock the shaders, when you've gone too far are the results the same as when you overclock the memory. Artifacts, lockups, etc. This is the first card I've had where this is an option. Thanks.

I also have the same problem with my evga superblocked. It wont run stable at 650/1900mhz. It had problems on the stock fan, i thought i was maybe a heat issue. I bought a vf900 with extra ramsinks to boot. Temps went down a good 20C but i still had the same issue. If i run the ram about ~15mhz lower it seems to be ok. Ive had the core all the way up to 710mhz and it seemed pretty stable, so its pretty obvious its the ram. I would RMA it, but i just got the damn thing, plus i would have to put the stock cooler back on and be without a card for while. It may be heat issues for some, but certianly not all of us

It's a heat issue. You need to increase the fan speed from 29% to 45-50%
I'm 100% sure its not heat related but is as some others have said a memory issue. I put after market hsfs (ND1s) on my dual 8800gt cards and experience the same problem (artifacts and hard locks).

Lowering my speeds to 625/925 from 650/950 solve this problem. PSU is NOT an issue. I'm considering exchanging these but so far artifacts only appear in Crysis.
