8800gs or HD3870!!!

I recently bought an HD3870 from Gigabyte. The card only has GDDR3 memory in it. I am wondering if an 8800gs would be better. I actually already compulsively ordered the 8800gs, but I am :confused:wondering which one I should keep.

well you can crossfire your 3870 later.. 8800gs are novelty cards that will be gone totally in a few weeks so if you want to SLI you will either have to buy a stronger card and make it downclock or buy a weaker card and make your gs downclock.

at this point i think logic says u cancel your 8800gs order.

imo

Thanks. :(No chance to cancel order now. Already shipped. Not sure if I'll ever crossfire or SLI, but I can't combine different 8800 cards?

I have been kicking myself over this for being so damn impulsive.

You can combine different 8800 cards i believe but since you probaly wont be able to find another 8800gs since they are filler product that will be gone after the 9600gt launches you would either have to buy a old 8800gts non G92 or grab a better card like a 8800gt but the GT will run slower to match the GS i believe...

AMD/ATI is doing good things with combiing different level cards in crossfire Invidia may be on track to do the same thing i suppose.

If iam off base on the invidia SLI thing somebody feel free to correct me

I dont even get why are you upset with your buy..

The 3870 is a better gpu than the stock 8800GS... period. Overclocked versions may be faster/onpar but the 3870 also can be overclocked.

Hey, you're not the only one - you're developing feelings for video cards. You're going to become one of us sooner or later. You'll see.

he's upset because he couldnt decide which one to buy so he ended up buying BOTH :p

The 3870 is clearly superior, even if more expensive, so if you've already bought it I see no reason to go to the 8800GS. What you'll do with it is another matter!

Before I return, I plan on at least running 3dmark06 and few games to at least prove to myself that the HD3870 is superior. I'll post results here.

My Computer:
Intel E2200 @ 2.475 Ghz
Adata 2 GB DDR2 5400
uATX 945GC Mobo
Corsair VX450 PSU
WD 160 GB HDD
Vista Home Premium 32 bit

3DMark06 Scores:

GIGABYTE GV-RX387512H Radeon HD 3870 512MB
(Core/Mem)
Stock(780Mhz/950Mhz) - 9004
Max(860Mhz/1050Mhz) - 9297

XFX PVT88SFDF4 GeForce 8800GS 384MB
(Core/Mem)
Stock(580Mhz/1400Mhz) - 8360
Max(765Mhz/1900Mhz) - 9295

Definitely 3870 is faster than 8800GS. The 8800GS will definitely suffer on resolutions higher than 1280 x 1024. The HD3870 will leave it behind in higher resolutions.

Fuck 3dmark06. its useless for comparing video cards and its biased towards ATi (hey lets buy a 2900XT!!!!11)

The 8800GS is going to be way cheaper (atleast when it trickles out all the way), the 3870 is going to be faster.

Be careful however, Last year I was deciding between a 7900GS and an x1950pro, the x1950pro was superior, but it cost more, and it didn't overclock for shit (with high end heatsink), even a shitty 7900GS would overclock to be faster than an x1950pro, and in the end I got shafted with my decision. I don't believe ATi was stupid enough to use a digital VRM on the 3870 however so you mtie not have that problem.

I'd say the 3870 but I honestly don't know why you are comparing the two when theirs a 70-80 dollar price difference, you should be comparing it to the 3850, which early indications are that the 8800GS beats it.

lol, well only one person to blame for that move. Especailly with countless reviews around the net accessable by a simple google search.

Hey, thanks for the advice. I was only comparing them, because I currently have both on hand.

3870 unless you need fixed aspect ratio support. Since you already ordered it...

HD 3870 FTW..:D

Gigabyte sells a ~$200 version of the HD3870 that comes with HD3870 core speeds but paired with DDR3 memory and a Zalman fan.

i was pissed buying a 8800gts 640 and 8800gt came out 1 week later, i paid 340 for my card :p

but theni stepped up to g92 8800gts for $27 so its not that bad :D :D

Get this red MSI 8800GT for 209usd with rebate and pretend it's a HD 3870 :p GT cards are much more balanced and it particular with AA-

It has a good cooler and comes @ 660 on the core out of the box. Read below for a comparison of a GT around 660 with a HD 3870-

And here's a review that shows a HD 3870 @ 850 on the core vs a stock GT 512Mb. (Flat 600MHz)
