8800 Ultra

$850
Nvidia can plant their lips firmly on my ass, $850.

Somebody at Nvidia is lacking common sense.

I understand the need for people to have the best, but this is pretty much crazy.

This card will sell like fried turd. Not that it isn't good, but it sure as hell isn't 850 bucks worth of good.

hehe

The way I see it this card is only for the investors... in the next board meeting the execs can claim they still have the best on the market and a broader range than the other guy.

Well, I remember quite a few people, buying $750-$800 7800 GTX 512, at the time. It will sell, even if the price is that high. But I completely agree!! This is too much and I guess it's the price for no competition.

But you see that is the problem.
There are fuckin morons out there that have no self esteem, so they will buy this shit at insane prices just so they can say they have the best and watch their little e-peckers grow.
This sends a message to manufactures that people will pay stupid prices for silly shit, so they will continue to do it..

The funny thing here is, the best of the best is only a few hundred MHz faster then normal and BFG already sells a GTX @ 626/2000 for $600. LOL
So unless this card is more then just clock increases, anyone who buys one wins the Darwin Award of Stupidity.

It will sell out though, because there are infact a lot of stupid people in this world.

As I see it as long as ATi doesn't have anything on the market there really is no reason for Nvidia to have anything cheaper on the market. Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but please ATi. I would never buy an ATi card, but there is a good bloody reason to have competition. Can anyone find better details on those cards, I can't find the clock speeds and type of memory. Another thing I would of expected of Nvidia's high end card would of been more then a gig of on board memory, WTF. This at first glance is just an 8800GTX OC with a better cool (or be think).

I already overclock my 8800GTX to 620/1000 and that wasn't even taking it to its limits, just a preliminary bases on other ppls average.

Seems to me Nvidia made a pretty ballsy move with this generation. Instead of looking at the designs and saying ok we will open the generation with these settings than six months later a refresh with these. Looks to me they decided to go all out with the initial offering to gather market share and leave little or no advancement for the refresh.

Which matches everyone's surprise at just how well the 8800GTX performed from the previous generation. Moreover it might also answer why ATi had to do the same thing and basically launch it's R600 refresh first as well which led to the delay.

Shrewd move by Nvidia and personally I agree with it. I would rather have a processor generation launch at it's complete best with only minor increases for the refresh.

Those of you who havent figured it out: this is what the future looks like if ATI doesnt get its head out of its ... This is what it used to be like when NV ruled after 3dfx fell apart and before ATI came on as strong as it did.

Dont get me wrong, if I knew then what I know now, I would ahve bought a GTS back in the fall. Im sure ATI is scrambling to move up its next release as quickly as possible; for all our sakes I hope they can do so as the future is very bleak if things get left in the hands of an NV monopoly.

From anand's review, and I agree----------

--But it is ridiculous to charge an exorbitant amount of money for something that doesn't offer any benefit over a product already on the market. $830 isn't the issue. In fact, we would love to see a graphics card worth $830. The 8800 Ultra just isn't it.

You guys laugh, and yeah it is pretty laughable, a card which brings marginal improvement on an already cpu limited video card, and if I remember correctly it was the same case with the 7800GTX 512, but that card sold out as quickly as vendors could get them, for 150+ over MSRP, people wanted them.

I mean for you and me the 8800 ultra makes no sense, get a factory overclocked 8800GTX, save over 250 dollars, and write off the other 2-3% improvement w/ the ultra as useless, but theres the type of person (you know who you are) who is always on the bleeding edge, too much is never enough, with deep pockets, this is the card for them. Nvidia is hoping this type of person will disregard the extra cost for the name and subsequent overclocked v overclocked gain (being a higher binned / updated chip), they mite sell those cards, and they mite not, im sure ither result will be surprising.

One thing I think nvidia could of / should of done would be to take the 8800 ultra, put it in the 8800 GTX's price range (not initially) and phase the 8800GTX out while using the 8800 ultra to bolster there top end offering. Or what they could of done is made a 8800GTX rev2 and just phase out the old chips, or better yet make the 8800 GTX "extreme" for about $100 more than the base 8800GTX (same level overclocked 8800GTX's are at), and possibly allow evga, xfx, bfg, etc to offer overclocked versions of the "Extremes"

I think nvidia could of done better with introducing the 8800 ultra, even being "limited" as it is, but I think w/e the outcome, nvidia won't be hurting from there decision.

7800GTX512 had alot of things going for it, some of those weren't marginal increases in performance either, you had one hell of a cooler on it, insane speed on the memory and the clock, not to mention people were oc'ing these on stock cooling pretty high as well

these are pretty much a slightly different cooler (almost the same, slightly displaced fan), slightly faster ram and a nice increase on the SP clock, which showed to have no effect on gaming right now

I'm so  right now, arent people getting pretty much the same results from their OC's on their current GTX right now?

I wonder how much you can OC the 8800 Ultra...then again if its just a modded 8800GTX then you might be SOL, might not be able to draw enough power to truly OC it.

the 8800 ultra draws 2-3% less power than a 8800GTX, nvidia did improve the core slightly, im not sure if its a core revision or just a higher binned chip.

850 eh?

Hmm... This card better come with a coupon for a night with a <certain unnamed> nVidia executive's hot young daughter.

Considering R600 is not looking to be an “8800-killer,” it would seem that NVIDIA has miscalculated the 8800 Ultra product and only ended up marketing against themselves and looking somewhat foolish and arrogant with this overpriced product that seems to be little more than a “PR part.” Sorry NVIDIA, your Ultra is just not worth the money.

Well put [H]!
I am always one of the first to shell out $$ for high performance, but this is stupid.

this 8800 ultra release is a joke in my opinion. $850? What is nvidia thinking. Most 8800gtx's hit 625/2000 all day or higher which is already 96GB/s memory bandwidith. The 8800 ultra is specified at 103.68GB/s memory bandwidth. How could anyways justifiy spending $300 more for 7GB/s of extra memory bandwidth. This is only like 8% performance increase at max which is probably only like a couple frames per sec faster. I can almost guarantee there wouldnt be any noticeable performance increase.
