8800 GTX worth it?

Entirely up to you. Worth it to some, not to others.

If you have $600, though, why not?

You'll notice a bit of a gain...

Nothing INCREDIBLE, but if your current setup is "really" close to your desired FPS settings... Might as well

The 7900s will sell for at least 150$.

You might save a bit on your power bill...

If you can sell the old 7900GTs for more than $400 combined, sure.

Well I have sli 78s and a 8800gtx, and the 8800gtx fukin kills the sli 78s, so it will also do that with the 79s, so yea it is worth it but not at the moment as the drivers for it are shite and you will go threw aload of drivers in the next couple months.

I hate when nvidia does this shit, releases cards but do their drivers half assed

And catalyst is much better?

haha, well in all seriousness, the newest drivers are pretty damn good. They're a tad buggy, but we're literally at the limit of driver performance. We're at LEAST in the upper 10% tail!

As I said, a GTX would beat the 7900GTXs in SLI by about 20-30%

I have two 7900 GTs and am thinking of selling them and buying a 8800 GTX. Thoughts?

I say wait it out alittle while longer (2 months).
Let's see what ATI comes out fighting with first.

by christmas, if not i think i might wait, as i game nearly everyday, and do not like beta anything or buggy software.yet i play BF2, go figure.

As I said, the drivers arn't THAT bad! Just some bugs to work out...

And as for waiting, yes I agree. Waiting till january would be a good idea, ATI has something major up it's sleeve.

But, the resale value of your 7900's is gonna drop FAST, come the next year.

is it proper to ask what would be the 8800gtx gonna be powering? 24" or 30"?

Definitely a good point.

Still, you'll notice SOME benefit going to a GTX... Even on a 19" monitor you'd get higher average frame rates...

I decided I am going the 8800GTX route. I guess I will be pissed if ATI comes out with the best thing ever though.

Don't let the "next offering" bother you. Just enjoy what you have because it will be an amazing experience. :)

I didn't think it would be worth it for me to upgrade from my x1800xt, but now that I've got it and have ran it through it's paces, I'd say it was WELL WORTH IT. The performance is absolutely amazing.

I would say go for it. But then again im the kind of guy that just does stuff before thinking.

If you have the $, then wtf, DEFINITELY do it. If you want to get the most performance AND best deal, wait for the price to drop. This should be applied in all areas of life! Like in buying cars and other stuff.
but hey, you dont have to listen to me

someone is always going to come out with something better... at least you'll have a card you'll be happy with.. I went from 1900XT + XTX in CrossFire and I am enjoying the hell out of my 8800GTX.. some of the scenes in FEAR EP would bring my CF setup to it's knees and running with the 8800 in the same areas, it just slices through the frames like a hot knife through butter.. seems to have less dips in FPS, and even when it does, it seems smoother.. for some reason..

anyways.. get ready to be happy, especially if you're gaming at 1600x1200 and up! :)

With my 7950GX2 (basically 7900GT 512MB SLI) I was playing Oblivion at 1440x900 with HDR, no AA, 16xAF with "HQ" and opts off. Max in-game settings as well. I had to use a low-poly grass mod to get grass at an acceptable performance level though.

Now with my 8800GTX I play Oblivion at 1440x900 with HDR, 16xQ AA, 16xAF angle-independent HQ and opts off, max in-game settings with full-poly grass and I still get far smoother framerates, and it looks beautiful. I even tweaked a few things in the .ini to INCREASE the visual quality (longer specular distance, more water reflections, etc.)

Worth it? That's a matter of perspective. But in my opinion, it's one of best upgrades I've ever made. Every time I upgrade to a new high end GPU, I max out the driver and game settings just for fun. This is the first time I've ever actually been able to leave them that way!

PS - I also scoff at the notion that you need a huge monitor for a top end GPU to be "worth it."

I hope that was not directed at my comment about being especially happy at 1600x1200 and up.. I only meant the performance increase might be more noticable at those resolutions, and the fact that going from say 1600x1200 to 1920x1200 doesn't only yields the slightest of performance impact... very nice! This is not to say it would not be worth the upgrade for any res, though.. I think it /would/ be worth it if you're a gaming enthusiast.

Nah it wasn't at you. I just know that's a common attitude "D00d y r u playing a 8800GTX on a 19" monitor LOLZ?"

Personally I can't stand gaming without a healthy dose of AA and AF.

coolio.. and I agree with your observation about being able to turn things up to test performance with max settings and finally being able to leave them like that.. for sure a first time for me also. crazy nice.

You guys have fun waiting for DX10 games. In the mean time I'll be enjoying current games, Quake Wars, UT2k7, etc. at liquid framerates.

Can you show me where you bought this game ? :D

Yeah, agreed... I run on a 19" widescreen and having *everything* maxxed (AA, AF, ingame settings and HDR) with my GTS, while getting in the high 30's average framerate... Damn. Best 550$ I've ever spent.

THe 8800gtx is the most signifcant GPU upgrade I've ever had the pleasure of whacking inside my box.

I came from a 7950gx2 and run a 3007fpw at 2560x1600. The GX2 struggled with most stuff at 2560x1600 with low to medium settings and HDR off, whereas the 8800gtx chews it up, spits it out and says "gimme more" ... this is with most visual/quality settings absolutely MAXXED and HDR on.

It's the meanest piece of GPU PCB ever released, bar none. I only wish I had a board that supported SLI.. I'd sell a kidney and buy a second one to SLI them.

har har, good one ;)

My point was just that these games will be out before DX10 games. OK UT2k7 is debateable, but the huge library of current games, including ones like Oblivion and FEAR that were already choking current hardware, and Quake Wars, slated for release this year, will all benefit hugely from the 8800.

I think "I'll wait for DX10" is just the excuse that people who are waiting for cheaper cards. What they are really saying is "I'll wait for a $200 midrange card, which will probably arrive around the same time as DX10." Nothing wrong with that. Not everybody is willing to pay $500-$600 for a video card.

I agree with that statement completely wulf...

I love my 8800 level card though :D.

Damn these things get hot!

I'm gonna smoke you guys at UT2007 no matter what card you have.

And I care because?

BTW why attempt (unsuccessfully) to hide that statement?

Since ATi's drivers are the only ones I've ever experienced monitor compatability issues with, I'd say no.

I too find the performance of the 8800GTX at 2560x1600 to be much, much better.

Well, And here I thought you wouldn't see it.
But I was kidding...

Well, I didn't "see" it, but I did notice the conspicuous extra space between the unhidden text and your sig ;)

You're probably right anyway, I'm not the least bit 1337 online. I'm the guy who goes around kamikazi-ing and driving the serious players nuts :p
