I am in the process of currently upgrading this:

Athlon 64 3200+
Abit KN8
2GB Ram
Ati X1950 pro

to this

C2D E6300
Abit 775 Board
2GB DDR2 Ram
8800 GTS ?

I am buying the upgrade parts bit by bit and can currently return/exchange the 1950 pro and add money to it to get the 8800GTS. My question is would it be worth it to do this and run the 8800 in the 3200+ machine until I get all the parts for the new machine?

your 3200+ would be fine with the 8800gts

just run your games at high res with aa and af enabled and you will barely notice a difference between your x2 and a c2d

Sure, but only when you get your Core 2 Duo system, you'll see the GTS shine.
Until then, sumofatguy's advice is the only thing you can do to avoid the 3200+ from being the bottleneck.

For example, I just upgraded from a 3800x2 @2.5GHz with 7800GTX

To: E6400 @3.3GHz, EVGA 680i, 8800GTS

My system more than doubled in speed, according to 3dmark 05,06.

You'll be happy with that system upgrade.

I have a 4200+ X2 and 2 GB RAM and GTS. TBH everything works great.

Yes You will have much higher scores in benchmarks and PC will be overall faster with C2D but it isn't only solution.

Well You could change CPU for something like 4400 or 4800+ X2 and go with a GTX. Rest of a money You could put back on account and save some more money and upgrade to C2D next time You have enough money. Prices of C2D will fall pretty soon and new 6350 and 6450 will have 2x2 MB cache. Hence in few months You will get much more for same money and for now You will be able to playh good.

GTX suffers from to litle CPU power even more then GTS though GTX would be better option once You upgrade to C2D. Those X2 CPU's might be hard to find but cost peanuts.

So in two steps program You would end up with C2D CPU with 4 MB L2 (or new model or E6600) and GTX. It wouldn't cost that much more either.

So you think the right route would be to keep my socket 939 and just get an amd x2 plus the 8800 gts for now and wait for q2 on the c2d price drops? My issue is that I am prepping my machine mainly for Vanguard and the reccommended processor is 3.0ghz or higher

An X2 cpu at 2.4 or 2.6 is going to run Vanguard decently. Plus a GTS is well matched to that power range and will only get faster once you do go to a C2D rig.

The advice above is pretty sound, and if you are a gamer type then that GTS and an X2 is going to be pretty damn close to the C2D rigs for REAL games as long as you run a higher resolution and crank up the eye candy.

I can tell you my REAL game benches literally doubled going from a 7900GT to the 8800GTS, provided I am running 2x to 4x AA and 16x AF, with the res up at 1680x1050 and LOTS of eye candy.

Forget 3DFarce06 scores for anything other than baselining, they are too cpu biased and do not represent real world results.

The max resolution i can run is 1990x400 widescreen as i have a 19 inch widescreen. Will that hold me back?

You mean 1440x900 right? Yes, a GTS is PLENTY powerful to run that resolution with a decent X2 cpu. Crank up the AA and AF and eye candy. Enjoy!!!
