I just got an 8800 GT and I installed rivatuner so I could make the fanspeeds go higher. But after about a week it's just annoying to hear the fan go to 100% when I'm playing Crysis, and it's distracting. I'm looking at getting another heatsink/fan. What would you suggest?

I was looking at the HR-03 GT from Thermalright,
http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_p...r_hr03gt.htm?art=MTQyMywxLCxoZW50aHVzaWFzdA==

I think I'd want to install a 92mm fan on it but I wasn't sure if I'd be able to control the fan speed in rivatuner.

I just sit mine @58% constant.

100% is overkill and WAYY too loud, I can barely notice it below 60%.

I never have any issues. But im just running the factory EVGA 8800GT superclock.

Yep the S1 is a killer solution.
Max load temp clocked is 42C on mine :)

I was looking at the newegg page and it's not listed as compatible with the 8800 GT? Does that matter or no?

It is compatible as the mounting holes match the GT.
There is a newer version that is rated as compatible with the 8800GT by Arctic Cooling.
Its almost the same but has mounting holes for more cards as well.
They also say the 8800GT doesnt need a cooler on the Voltage Regulators so there is no difference between the V1 and V2 for the 8800GT.
The older S1 version is just as compatible.
I have the older version fitted..

No mattter which version you get, the ramsinks are a pig to stick on.
I read of a good method though..
Heat the heatsinks+gel with hot air from a hair dryer or fan heater before fitting.
This will make the adhesive gel bond much better.
If you dont do this they are likely to be more of an insulator than a heatsink and often drop off!

The AC S1 or the Zalman VF900 work great with the 8800GT. I had the VF900 on my 7900GS, so it was a cheap, easy swap, but if I had to buy a new one, it would be the S1.

i have the VF900 it made a huge difference. i leave my 8800gt OC's 720/1050 and it is still 20c cooler on load. i have the fan set just low enough to i cant hear it,

Would you suggest installing a fan onto the S1 Rev2? And if yes, can I just get any 80MM fan or is there a specific fan I should get?

Yes an 80mm fan is great.
I took the blanking plates off all the PCI slots below my graphics card and strapped an 80mm fan on them so it draws cold air in and blows towards the cooler.
That was so good, I built a cardboard box for the fan so it blows directly onto the cooler and draws cold air from the rear slots. Brilliant.

On the link above (post #11) theres the fan designed to go with it for an extra $10 or so.
Many people have strapped 80mm fans to it, you can fit 2 !

Just get any S1 and zip tie fans to it.

S1 > all in terms of performance and price

Ah ok cool thanks.

But what about the Thermalright? Anyone think that's worth comparing to the Arctic cooling or just going with the arctic cooling?

Yeah, the HR-03gt is certainly no Ultra 120 Extreme...

passive: S1 > HR-03gt

overclocking: S1 (2 x 120mm fans) > HR-03gt (1 x 92mm fan)

Thanks for the input, just ordered it, should be getting it this week.

Oh and thanks a lot Hazarro for posting an e-tailer that was selling it, cause I couldn't find it anywhere

Should I have also purchased some thermal grease or should it come with at least a little?

S1 is the best as far as GPU cooler goes. It's massive, I love mine.

However - the ramsinks it comes with are garbage. I read they were before I bought mine, and figured I could work something out - nope, garbage. They are small, and come with no real adhesive so you have to use glue and paste, or ideally just get some good ones.

Everyone is asking if the voltage regs need cooling as per OEM heatsink, and with good case cooling I've had no problems with them uncovered.

The S1 really shines with a 120mm under it an inch or two away, set to ~7v

I ordered a thermalright mosfet ramsink set, and two of the four refused to stick. Either way, with a VF900 on it, and OCed to 700/1000, I've had NO issues running them without sinks. One day I'll do the dots of crazy glue & AC Ceramique trick. *shrug*

No, you can use the ones that come with it if you heat them up well before fitting them so the adhesive gel becomes tackier and bonds better.
Alternatively you can clean the old adhesive gel off and fit them with Akasa thermal tape, I did this.
Cleaning the old gel off isnt easy and involved a pan of hot water, many cloths and some alcohol (not for drinking!).

Ah ok, what's the best way to heat up the ramsinks that come with the cooler?

Just got an e-mail from side winder computers and they freaking sold out of the heatsink!

Gonna have to find some other e-tailer that sells it now!

Use a hair dryer or fan heater to heat them up.
You might want to pick them up with gloves though!

Yup, just zip tie your favorite 120mm fan to it. That's what I did here... and it works great!

You may not even NEED a fan though. If you've got enough exhaust fans in your case you'll create negative pressure and this will pull cold air through the vented slot cover (comes with the Accelero S1) and cool your card. It works suprisingly well even for highly overclocked cards.

Holy hell thanks a lot Blue Falcon. Definitely going to use your thread to help me when I get mine.

Jeez man it's like impossible to find an e-tailer that carries the S1 Rev 2. I ordered one and they e-mailed me cause they sold out.

yeah everywhere is OOS

im going to test my luck with a unknown retailer. i ordered the S1 from Price Guide Network. the S1 is cheaper then newegg but the shipping with the S1 and turbo module is bit high at $8.50

Hope all goes well, total i paid for both S1 and module with shipping was $37.50

to clean off the ramsinks, boil them for about 5-10 minutes and let them cool. After that, you can peel the thermal tape right off.

I ran passively for a while until I decided to oc a bit and found my ram hit a wall pretty fast. (I needed to add a fan to cool the power regulator nonsense.) I had no thin zipties so I just rigged a pair of rubber bands, one on each side and four short twist ties on the fan to anchor the bands into place. worked like magic, though my ram still craps out on me at 1000, probably need to reseat some sinks or get the thermalright kit for the pwm.

My way is definatley kind of ghetto, but hey, it worked and it's probably like noise dampening or something magical like that too. lol.

I run my 8800GT fan, which is the newer bigger model, at 100% and it isn't as loud as everyone makes it to be. I idle at 40-45C and it's OC'd to 685/1600/1000 too.

The thermal tape that comes with the Accelero ramsinks isn't garbage, it's your standard 3M thermal tape or 'fragtape' that we used to use back in the day. The PROBLEM is that people are not cleaning the BGA memory modules properly and therefore the fragtape will not adhere properly.

You must must MUST properly clean your memory modules before applying the ramsinks!

Here's the problem: The thermal pads that Nvidia is using for the ram on it's reference cooler are VERY greasy/oily. That plus the fact that the ceramic substrate used on the BGA modules is somewhat POROUS means a VERY thorough cleaning job is required.

My recommendation is to use the two-part thermal surface cleaning and purifying kit from Arctic Silver. ($6 at Newegg - one set will last you YEARS). Soak a cotton swab in solution #1 and then use it to clean all of the memory modules. Repeat this process TWO MORE TIMES - because the BGA modules are so porous this is neccesary to remove all of the greasy residue left from those tacky gummy white thermal pads. Next use a cotton swab soaked in solution #2 to remove any leftover residue and purify the BGA module surface. Wait for it to dry.

Now that the modules are clean you can remove the tape backing from the ramsinks and apply them to the BGA modules. You've got ONE shot - once you've put the ramsink on the chip don't lift it back off! If it's slightly crooked oh well, tough cookies. Apple firm and even pressure with your finger for about 20 seconds. Repeat for the rest of the ramsinks and then finish your Accelero installation, being careful not to bump the ramsinks. Once the sinks go through a few thermal cycles they will be impossible to remove without a strong measure of force.

If you can't find (or don't wish to purchase) the Arctic Silver cleaning kit, you can use the same instructions above except use a Xylene based cleaner like 'GOOF-OFF!' or 'OOPS!' in place of solution 1, and 99% Isopropyl Alcohol in place of step 2. DO NOT USE GOO GONE INSTEAD OF GOOF-OFF. Goo Gone is an cleaner based on citrus oil and will just make things worse - it's not at all suited for this job.

Would you suggest heating up the ramsinks before applying them like other people have said or no?
