8600gt won't detect 1080p native resolution

So I threw together an extra desktop out of spare parts a couple weeks ago. I had it hooked up to my 40" toshiba tv. I had the desktop resolution set to 1920 x 1080 at 60hz, no problem. Then this last week I took my tv with me on thanksgiving. I got back home today, set up my tv, start up my extra desktop, and it is stuck at 1360 x 768. I tried setting a custom resolution through the nvidia control panel but no go. It just tells me that it failed the test. I tried opening up team fortress 2, but as soon as I do that my screen goes black and tells me that the video signal is unsupported.

Little info, 8600gt, windows vista 64bit ultimate, dvi -> vga.

Any suggestions?

This is a total n00b suggestion but try a restart. I unplugged my PC from my main display once and when I plugged it back in the resolution adjustment would only go up to 12x10. I restarted and the screen automatically adjusted to 16x10(native).

Every GPU that I've ever read about since the Radeon 9 days have had 400MHz RAMDAC, which should be good for 20x15 @ 85Hz. I can't imagine VGA being the issue.

Yes, it can. Until Dual-Link DVI came along, the analog connector was still the only connector capable of driving 2048+ resolution displays. In fact, I have been using the VGA port on my laptop to drive a 1080p display for the past two years(at 1080p).
 
Yeah, restart hasn't helped. Also, I know that it can do 1080 because it did so for a couple weeks.
 
Assuming the video card has two DVI ports, try plugging the cable into the other DVI port.
 
You might want to try a driver re-install. It should just be some kind of software bug. Use driver cleaner just to make sure all the old files are erased.

Thanks, yeah, I was on that track. I disabled the display drive and it let me take it up to 1600 x something. Of course, when I reenabled the display driver I was limited again. Oh boy, time for new drivers.
 
Well I don't know. Reinstalling drivers didn't help. However, I tried connecting it via a dvi to hdmi cable and that worked just fine... frustrating since I need that cable for a different computer.
