Is there somewhere I can get benchmarks of cards?

Also, I wanted to mention 7600 SLI vs. 8600. Which is better and best bang for the bucks?
Please don't just say the "8800 is faster because its the latest." I need more then that to justify the purchase and im not going above $300.

i would think an 8800gts 320mb would be faster than 8600's in sli.

i got mine for $250

SLI isn't worth it, even if the two 8600s are a tad faster than a 8800, you still have to deal with getting a SLI mobo, a bigger PSU, and potentially more driver issues, especially for the 8 series. Also, for some people, theres the resale value, a single 8800 is gonna hold it's value longer, and generally be more useful I would think.

an 8800gts will be faster because it's more than 2x faster in many benchmarks, and sli doesn't hit 100% efficiency.

Buy a single better card first and add another one later. My experience with 2 6800Ultra and a single 7950GT:

1) In 3DMarks06 the SLi is slightly better but in games I found that a single card is smoother.
2) A single card gives out less heat and noise than SLi.
3) A single card require less power than SLi.
4) There is less hassle setting up a single card than SLi.
5) I can add another 7950GT if I want to get more performance from my setup and it is cheaper now than before.

Btw SLi running in 16x is not much faster than 8x, less than 5% difference if you research about this on nVidia's forum.

why would you want to sli two low end cards for 175% of the cost and probably somewhat equal performance to a single higher end card?

SLI is not worth it? You are dead wrong!
I have 2 8800 GTX's in SLI and they smoke, end of story. There are no driver issues and as far as value is concerned buy an XBOX. If you are concerned about resale or value dont even think about posting. CPU's and VC's go out of style before you can change your underware.

For some people it's not worth it, the reasons are blatantly obvious.

1. Not everybody has a monitor with extremely high resolutions.
2. In competitive FPS high resolutions and high details are a massive disadvantage and not wanted at all.
3. The price for the performance gain is extremely steep.
4. Some people game over multiple monitors.

Those are 4 examples where SLI isn't needed, or is flat out worthless.

I have SLI 8800's so I'm not bashing the tech out of hate for something I don't have. It's fast, and it's amazing to crank oblivion and play, ditto with fear. But it's not for everybody. Hell when I play quake or UT I stick with 800x600 all low details multiplayer just because it's the best way to play it. So even I have instances where it's pointless.

Whatever. Opinions are like.........You have yours and I have mine.
You can say whatever you want, but SLI cannot be beat.
1. So why even think about it?
2. Your opinion
3. You get what you pay for
4. I do too
Lastly, please do not bring a knife to a gunfight.

Use your brain. You have two top end cards in SLI and this thread is about choosing two midrange cards instead of one high end card. In this case SLI would be stupid because two 8600 cards would cost more than an 8800gts and in most cases would not even be as fast.

Other then you missing what this thread is about (2 mid range vs one top) your remark holds no water at all.

1. so then obviously SLI has no point, congrats you just pointed out that you were wrong (being wrong is a trend with you I see)
2. no this is a proven fact. go to cpl/ggl/wcg and watch them, all low details, low res, everything removed, even neon skins in some games. This is a proven fact that it's a better way to play MP shooters to win.
3. you don't gain double the performance for double the cost, so no you do not get what you pay for
4. SLI supports multiple monitors? I think you're wrong on this one.

So dead wrong on every count, yay you!

Again I own 8800 SLI, and it's great. But it's not the be-all-end-all in every situation. Nor is my ego so caught up in my PC that I have to justify the purchases by claiming it is.

Don't the 8800s have dual cores or something but the 8600s don't?

I forsee the purchase of a 8800GT 320MB.

all of the players in my ut04 use low detail settings. I use 1280x1024 just because I'm used to it, however lod is high, all settings are as low as can be ( we're a semi-competitive team, not pros or anything but we are deffinately above average and we play in ladders/leagues). Just gets rid of the excess shit you don't need and helps you focus on obtaining kills.

And the missed point post of the year goes to...

Cmon, Seeker, this isn't a Pimp your GTX SLI setup. It's great you have one, but that's not related at ALL to what this thread is about!

2 8600's in SLI arn't worth it.

2 8800GTX's in SLI might be worth it.

Now, of the above 2 options, what is this thread about?

And this hits the core of the issue. The more visual detail you can remove from a frag fest the better the shot, the less clutter you don't need, and better defined players vs map layout. Low details own all.

SLI doesn't help this, in fact in some situations it hurts it. at 800x600 125hz refresh on a top CRT (the ideal situation for competition FPS) SLI offers no gains, and can actually drop FPS in some situations. Thus it's not needed at all. If you're pushing those details and ultra high res it's a handicap.

SLI is great, but don't claim is the best.

No they aren't dual GPU, but even a single 8800 will spank dual 8600's.

Unless you go the 8800 option SLI just isn't worth it period. And even then, depending on what games you play, or how you play them, it may or may not be worth it. If you have the money go for it, if you don't there is no reason to waste the extra cash unless you want e-penor brag rights. However being able to crank a game in single player, and kick back for a couple hours with the best GFX out there is an amazing experience and well worth it if you can afford it.

So, we're leaching bandwidth here are we? What would your mom have to say about that!

I was just referring to SLI and not with 8600's. Obviously 1 8800 would be better.

In the long run wouldn't SLI 8600s instead of 8800s be better for a mid end system? The 8600s would be $400 while the 8800s, $600-$1000. Thats a no brainer. The 8800 just has high clocks right, nothing else? I doubt you wo even see a difference in performance with320 or 640MBs on the 8800.

ok flame away

read the thread title. its 8600sli or ONE 8800.

nope..

8600GTS 32 stream processors, 128-bit memory interface width, 32GB/sec memory bandwidth, 8 ROP's

8800GTS 96 stream processors, 320-bit memory interface width, 64GB/sec memory bandwidth, 20 ROP's

I doubt you wo even see a difference in performance with320 or 640MBs on the 8800.
Depends on the resolution and the game. Some games can make use of more than 320MB's. Especially when it comes to texture mod packs.

- Also, don't forget, SLI doesn't double the available GPU memory.. That may be a bit more important with games coming out this year.

one 8800 is faster than two 8600's in sli, and is cheaper.
