8400 or q9300?

Fry's has the 8400 with a intel G35 based motherboard on sale this weekend, they also have the q9300 with a cheaper G31 based motherboard on sale for less..

So do I get the quad with not a good of a MB or the dual for more $$ with the better board?
 
NEED MOAR info:
manufacturer & model # of said motherboards
and prices for each combo

I'd probably be inclined to get the q9300 and sell the motherboard for cheap and get a good P35 mobo.
 
$279 for 8400 with Intel DG35EC motherboard. $259 for Q9300 with ECS G31T-M motherboard.

If you're keeping it for a long time get the quad

If you're using it for less than a year get the 8400
 
Get whatever is cheapest. I'd vote E8400/E8500. Or do whatever you want and flip a coin. It don't really matter cause by the time most software and games in particular will need 4+ cores will not be on a LGA 775 socket.

Either of these processors would dominate anything you throw at it until the next round of sockets and Nehalem. Even if your upgrade path is 2+ years. Don't buy for future promises. Cuz in the future you will be upgraded to DDR8 and 12 core D9000s.
 
I can't see buying a G31 chipset. I can't see buying an ECS motherboard.

That would leave the Intel board + E8400, but I'm not too thrilled with that mobo either.

Thats why I had suggested the q9300 + a REAL motherboard, b/c I figured either combo deal was to get rid of crappy mobos they couldn't move.
 
I will probably pick up one of these combo's for my mom's pc.

If it was mine, I wouldn't get any of those mobos hehe. Not enough features and tweaking and oc'ing
 
multi tasking is better on quad than e8400

i tried both first hand and the cpu usage would go higher on the e8400 the quad felt much more smoother
 
Get the E8400. It's still overkill most likely, but at least the board won't melt after a few months.
 
I would personally go for a higher clock than more cores at this point int time.

Thats what I opted for b/c I upgrade often. So I know by the time I need quad core I'll be ready to upgrade.

But if the OP doesn't upgrade often the quad MIGHT hold up better in the long run.
 
well I ended up too busy this weekend to make it to Fry's.. lol, deal is still on till tomorrow though.

As for ECS quality, actually of my last 6 motherboards, 3 ECS, 2 abit and 1 asus, all 3 ECSs are still running strong, and the other 3 are all dead.. So while quite plain in the feature department, in my experience they are reliable enough. (varying ages etc, some "servers" on 24/7 others desktops)
