Any real significant difference between these 2 models besides warranty and longevity?

From a real world perspective, you are unlikely to feel a difference in performance.

Price is one tangible difference between them :)

the 840 had a weird problem with unusual slow down after some use that was supposedly fixed with a firmware update that was then discovered to not fix the problem so....

I would go with the 850.
Or maybe even not with Samsung...

generally newer is worth it.
The Crucial MX100 is worthy of consideration. The older Crucial M500 has been occasionally on sale at low prices.

Good catch wrangler! I had thought the firmware update addressed the issue!

True! Specially after the issues with old file performance on some of their drives.
MX100 or ARC100 are pretty good deals, good price and very reliable.

The SSD drives have gotten more and more reliable. Do t go with older models, go with Samsung 850 or Vertex 460a.
