Hey guys, I have this heatsink/fan combo for over a year now, but the sound of the fan is drivin me crazy, its a tornado fan, with 90db or somethin like that. Anyways, I was thinkin I could jsut replace the fan with something quieter that still puts out a decent amount of air flow, obviously doesnt have to be as much as before.. so does anyone have any suggestions? (im not overclocking anymore)

NOT OVERCLOCKING!?!?!?!/1/11/1/213

blasphemy!

I've heard good things about Silenx fans though, look into that.

heh yah, used to overclock my xp 1600 to xp 2400, without a problem, but lately its started to lock up and i have had to keep droppin the fsb.. and its progressively gettin worse..

what i was also thinkin is to just buy me an xp 2400 and oc it.. not sure yet though (how much do they oc ?)

right now though, its not worth to upgrade the whole computer yet, nothin is gettin any better it seems.. (not as big improvements as in past.. cpus etc..)

Look into a bigger fan. You can probably get a 92mm fan onto your heatsink, either with a funnel adapter, or it might just support that size natively. You could also get a funnel that would let you run a 120mm fan and funnel it down to 80mm. With both of these options however, you will see reduced flow from the fans. The tornado fans put out a *lot* of air, but if you're not overclocking, getting a stealth 120mm fan and a funnel adapter would probably be a good idea, as it'd be fairly quiet(rated at 28dBA, probably be a bit higher because of the funnel/fins of the heatsink, but drowned out a bit by your case), and cool well enough.

id go with either of these coupled with a rheobus since the dB goes all the way down to 17dB which is nice and quiet.

not much performance difference...

Thermaltake 80mm Smart Fan II:
20.55 CFM at 1300rpm, 17 dB
75.7 CFM at 4800rpm, 48 dB

Thermaltake 80mm LED Fan:
21.6 CFM at 1300rpm, 17 dB
72.5 CFM at 4800rpm, 48.5 dB

btw, if your going to get a cpu upgrade id suggest the xp mobile 2400+ or 2500+. if you arent overclocking the super low stock voltage means low temps which means you might even get away with no fan at all depending on your hsf. if not something like this 9dB fan or this 12dB fan. just another idea. :p

If you desire super quiet, the Papst fans are probably the quietest on the market.

Other fans you might want to look at are the Panaflo silent fans (~22 dB?), Vantec Stealth fans, and Zalmans.
