80mm Fan help please...

Im looking for a 2 case fans for my antec SOHO case. I want the thermaltake smart fans but I want to be able to physically control the speed of the fans my self, maybe with a knob or somthing. I know there are some fans out there with knobs already on them but I dont like the perfromence there giveing. I want somthing that comes with a knob and goes up to any where from 4400-5000rpm at the highest speeds, and the low RPM's dont really matter.

I saw the silverstone fan but I dont like the fact that it uses a 3inch bay for the fan controller.

I also liked the enermax fan style with the knob on the back of the fan... But the RPM's are weak...

Let me know if you guys find somthing or already have somthing that Im looking for. Thanks!

Also If anything I'll prolly end up just hooking up a vantec fan controller, can you pick any fan or only fans that you can adjust the speeds too... How does it work, does it just boost up and down the voltage to the fans??? Could this damage the fans in the long run?
 
I currently control 7 Panaflo U1A's through a vantec controller, works like a charm.
Plenty of airflow when I need it, and super quiet when I want it to be.

The controllers work by putting adjustable rheostats in-line with the fan, changing current flow. I dont believe this changes the life expectancy of the fan (Not sure.)

Any 12V fan can be controlled in this manner.

 
I don't see how it could concievably alter the life expectancy of any fan give that you're reducing the wear on the fan both mechanically and electrically.

i think that one could make a case that opperating at slower RPMs than the fan was speced for would mean that each pole on the motor is holding for longer than it was intended to, thus heating it up more, thus shortening life expectancy................but i agree with you that it shouldn't.

fans normally fail due to worn out bearings, and running them slower slows the wear where it will make the most difference, even if you assume that running is doing something bad to the motor. if you assume that the motor is fine with running slow, then there is not problem at all.
 
Yea im prolly gunna do the vantec fan controller at newegg. And 2 intakes up front and 2 exhausts in the back and controll them that way. Im not sure what fans though.

Is this gunna be wiring from hell. I think i can already imagin
