Hello. Just today I bought a handful of parts to build a new computer. I got a Gigabyte motherboard with an nVidia nForce 3 chipset, and an Athlon X2 3800+ CPU. I was told that I would need to update the firmware/bios on the motherboard for this CPU.

I thought that it would work, but just not to its full potential, as it is. I am thinking this is not the case, because everything is hooked up (except the hard drive, I need a converter to power my SATA drive), and I get 6 beeps. My manual tells me that this means "8024 - gate A20 failure." After looking this up on the internet, apparently this could be a problem with the keyboard, or with the motherboard.

I also read it has something to do with the first 640KB of memory (reminds me of DOS lol). Anyways, can anyone just tell me if this problem is for sure because of the bios needing to be upgraded? Or if this is something else that I can fix without finding someone with another socket 939 processor (or the store from which I bought this - most likely they are going to charge me for anything they do), I would greatly appreciate it.

even if your mobo isn't flashed to recognize the X2, it would still boot as a single core proc. sounds like you could have some bad memory.

I less than three epox and jetway for putting POST code readers on their mobos.
 
the memory is fine. i have placed it in my old computer, which i am on right now. i thought the X2 would boot up like that, but its the only problem i can think of. so ill take it into the place where i bought all the parts, and if flashing it doesnt work, the its probably the motherboard, and - what a great place to get it fixed at - if it is the motherboard they will replace it right away, cause i just bought it yesterday.
 
I seem to remember several nf3 boards having serious issues with X2 processors before flashing the BIOS. Some wouldn't even boot without a BIOS flash. You might be able to call Gigabyte and get them to send you an update BIOS chip, or if you are feeling adventuresome you could do a hot flash :D

Please note that I am not liable for any damages you may incur by a failed hot flash, do so at your own risk.
 
serious issues as in not even showing the bios?? oh well, i have given up and i took it into the store which i bought all the parts from. they said they would be done today but they never called. either they were really busy or it has turned out to be a worse problem. although i am dying to use it right now, i will wait as long as it takes - within reason- for it to work lol. its gonna cost me $20... i would think that it would cost like $5 seeing as it would only take 5 minutes to put an older chip in and flash it. oh well, whatever is neccessary.
