My current wireless router setup is using 802.11b. I'm planning to get a new PCI wireless card, and I was wondering if I should get maybe an 802.11a or 802.11g card.

Will I be able to use either standards on a 802.11b router?

P/S: Any recommendation for said card?

From what i've read A spec is completely different, but dont quote me on that. However G spec is backwards compatible.

Keep in mind that A is the newest spec.

If you have a G router, and a client with a B card, it causes the G Router to drop down to B. So in all, it slows it down. But if you only have one wireless client being served, it wont matter.

Did I lose you?

Actually no, the AP won't drop down to 11 Mb. It will affect throughput however. Some AP's handle b/g hybrid's WLAN's better than others but nothing with current firmware should knock it down to CCK 11 Mbps.

Sounds like his AP is .11b though so the .11g client card he buys will in fact drop to 11 Mbps and use CCK modulation. Effective 802.11b WLAN
