so a friend wants to build himself a computer. he want to play games like counter strike source, half life 2, doom 3, the works. anyone have any suggestions on parts we could get offa newegg.com?

if the price goes up a little, its fine.. same if its less.

thanks in advance.

(ps: he doesnt need a monitor, speakers, windows, etc.. as hes got another comp, and he can get all that from that computer. its just basically the box.)

AMD 3000+
MSI Neo Platnium
Muskin or Corsair Value Ram
6600GT
40Gb HD to get by
Lite-On 16x drive

those off the top of my head

I think this is pretty good even though it is a little over the budget and does not include a monitor.

link

says the cart is empty,

well, like i said before, theres no need for monitor/software/mouse/kb etc as he has another computer he could take those parts from.

Tigerdirect is having a deal for 512MB Ultra PC-3200 (relabled corsair) for $49.00

you only need one stick since socket 754 is only single-channel memory.
Stick with that video card, I am rather partial to the 6800 line at the moment.
My friend has that case, he loves it, I think it looks decent.
Can't go wrong with a Lite-On drive.
Though, I would suggest getting a 128mb thumb drive
If you plan on not having a floppy drive.
Bust out the credit card, order that beast.
also, I would opt for the NF8:

i would love to run in dual channel. and ive seen some people talk about socket 939, and getting a mobo like that for upgrading oportunities in the future. anyone have any suggestions on a mobo like that? would i need to change the processor?

edit: oh, and also, i dont really like mail-in-rebates... =\

zipzoomfly has a
amd 3000+ (939) and MSI Neo 2 for 297 together. you could save some money from going from the 6800GT to the 6800OC. put the money towards the cpu and mobo

an update on the parts.

Went down on the video card, and ecided to go socket 939 and get a neo2 plat. The extra money went towards more ram. Any comments/suggestions? Looking to buy the system soon. System costs a bit more than I want it too, any suggestions on lowering price, but still keep it a viable gaming computer?

your friend would freak if you got him a 6800gt and cranked the settings, while the 6600gt is still amazing since it can rn 1600x1200 jus now extra aa or af. if you can save the old case, get the cheapest 2x512mb sticks of pc3200 you can(well a decent known brand)you dont need the big bad msi for your boy he wont be overclocking this system

Get the Leadtek 6600 GT, it does the best in reviews. Cool running, quieter than the XFX and a good overclocker.

For the aftermarket HSF, get a Thermalright XP-90 and a good 92mm or 120mm fan for it. The Thermaltake Silent Boost won't cool significantly better than stock. Or just use the stock HSF, it isn't that bad.

For RAM, don't get the expensive stuff unless you plan on overclocking.

For caes, I think you are better off with an Antec SLK3700-BQE. You get 120mm fans, a GOOD and quiet 350 Watt PSU, and various noise-reducing features.

aiight. so, which board out there will replace the msi? he wont be overclocking, so i guess the board can change, also, as for the ram, is there anything out there that will not overclock, but still have good performance? i like the idea on the hsf, but again, no overclocking will be taking place, so is there a necessity for a better one? also, i think i need a better psu, i really dont want the one i got now to really mess up the system, any suggestions?

btw, thanks for all the replies guys.

Quoted for major truth, I fully agree with everything this post states
