80-wire cable question

This is how i have it setup on one IDE channel with an 80-wire cable:

[Motherboard][]========[HDD set to master]====[CD/DVD RW set to slave]

Is this setup OK? I've read that the master device should go on the end of the 80-wire cable but it just won't work with my setup, this is pretty much the only way i can connect it. What issues might i have with this setup? should i make the CD/DVD burner master and the HDD slave because of their positions?

Why not just use two separate IDE headers for the two devices? As far as I know that's the optimal way to set it up to get the best transfer rate from HDD to CD-R, and well, you won't have to wonder if your setup is right.


Either way, you normally setup your HDD as master and CDR as slave, where the end connector is the master, and the middle on is slave.
 
Well yeah, but i already have 2 harddrives on the other IDE channel. Sorry i didn't clarify.
 
Your particular setup will function just fine.

However, you may experience slow burn/rip speeds going from CD/DVD to the HDD on that same IDE channel.

If it were me, I'd seperate the burner from any HDD that was used for burns/rips just to get maximum performance and not run into the IDE collisions.
