8 Processor Thread Limit for FAH

I am testing some new servers at work, and one of them is a Quad Processor Dual Core Hyper-Threaded machine with 8GB of RAM. So, 4x2x2=16 processes of folding goodness. Unfortunately, FAH will only allow me to specify up to 8 processes (at least in Windows). Not even modifying the config file will allow me to go over 8.

Any ideas?

2. If you copy one FAH directory to another, then either remove the "machineindependent.dat" files or change the MachineID value, so each "cloned" FAH client has a different MachineID value (maximum 8 of these kind of FAH clients per box).
Note: If you remove the "machinedependent.dat" files, then there is no need to change MachineID values and you can run an unlimited number of FAH clients per box, but you still have to start the clients twice or use the "rm -ifdr /tmp/fah" to get these going.

Yeah, I agree with Marty that you probably should just stick with using the logical processors only. Then you'll only have 8 and nothing to worry about. If you really want to try to get all 16 then try the linux thing that Marty posted. Good luck, and we need pics!

Can you try Foldix on one of these temporarily? It'll turn on 16 instances, and just assign them machine IDs up through 16. That *might* work... but here's another one to try - it sets all the machine IDs to 1 and runs the rm command mentioned on the FCF page.

I don't think this makes a great long-term solution for getting these boxen folding, of course, but it'll let you know if the Linux method works and which way it works. And, of course, sate my incredible curiosity. If it works like this, though, I may have a new cluster-based version of fold-server in the works ;) That'd be cool.

You asked for some pictures, well, here they are. I have 4 different servers running in this group, all multicore-multiprocessor. As you can see, I have 22 threads running over Linux, W2K, and W2K x64, OSes. That doesn't count what I have at home or what still may be running other places :D. Nearly 5200 points today!

So, all your folding are belong to us!

FYI, I don't think you need to go the Linux route to run more than 8 F@H clients on one machine, it can be done in Windows. I don't have any machines to try it on, but the #2 folder in the world, OC-AMD, does. He posted over a year ago how to do it here. If you try it and it still works, let us know.
