8-pin power connector?

Guys, the 5970 4gb card requires 8-pin PCI-E power connector

I only have this: 6-pin to 8-pin connector. Will it work on the card?

I'd question if any PSU not having an 8-pin connector has the juice.

If someone can afford a 4GB 5970, they can afford a better PSU?
 
Which brings us to the question, what PSU do you have?

But i'm going for 5970+5870 (Tri)

It's just that 5970 specs say that it requires 2 x 8-pin connectors (and i wasn't sure how power feed works and if "6pin-8pin" connectors that i currently use would work)
 
Yep it will work.

An 8 pin is simply a 6 pin with two extra ground pins. It contains 3 +12v and 5GND where as the 6 pin contains 3 +12v and 3GND. This is why 6 + 2 pin connectors have the additional 2 pins spliced into the last two ground slots.

I don't get what's the difference then.

Sounds like 6-pin and 8-pin both have only 3 +12v power wires.

Is ground really that important?
 
The PCI-Express 2.0 specifications (which is where the original specs for 8-pin PCI-E power connectors comes from) are very conservative to prevent any possibility of the wires melting down. Adding ground wires reduces the chances of meltdown.

6-pin PCI-E power connectors are officially specified to handle 75W, while 8-pin PCI-E power connectors are officially specified to handle 150W. There is nothing stopping cable and PSU makers from making connectors that actually handle much more than that, and, happily for the consumer, the norm does seem to be to exceed those specs. You could say it this way: most 6-pin PCI-E cables should be able to handle 150W, while all 8-pin PCI-E cables must be able to handle 150W.

The risk of a 6-pin PCI-E cable melting down at 150W is very low. But when writing an official spec like PCI-E 2.0, you have to assume that cheap manufacturers might decide to pinch pennies and do no more than the minimal specification, and write the specs to reduce that risk to zero.

And account for failures, which is probably the reason for the extra ground pins.

If you have a Corsair 1000W PSU, you should have 8 pin power connectors? At least 6 of them if I remember right
