I just ordered a Corsair cx430 as an upgrade for a friend. I did not even bother to look but it only comes with a 8 pin eps connector, his motherboard has a 4 pin connector, can i just plug in one side or do i need to get an adaptor?

You can plug half of an "EPS connector" safely into a "P4 connector" as long as it will physically fit. Standard EPS plugs are keyed such that only one half of them will fit in the P4 connector.

The EPS on my CX600 splits into two peices and has a slight variation from the standard EPS keying to allow both sides to be used as a "P4 connector".
