8 MB Cache worth the extra money?

Hey, im gettin a new HD today and at the local CompUSA theres a great deal for a Western Digital 160 gig 7200rpm 2MB cache HD.

Now although this issss dirt cheap, its not 8mb cache...is that worth getting. Im not looking to spend lots of money. The reason im gettin it cuz its cheap and I love West Dig. But if its def worth it ill wait to get the one with 8mb cache.

Im gonna raid with the gigabyte ga-7vaxp if that makes any difference.

Personally i'd say that 160 gigger is worth it @ .37 a gig(!)... an unheard of deal. The 8meg cache might be worth it but its next to impossible on finding such a good deal on it. Officemax B&M and online will be having a sale today on the 80-gigger 8meg cache for $20 after rebates so that might be worth a look. The online deal usually gets posted late morning on sunday so keep your eyes open at http://www.officemax.com if you're interested, or just drive to a retail store NOW ;)

Having a 3 year warranty is all I need to make me want to buy a 8mb cache hdd.

My 2 cents...;)
 
I bought the 160 gig one with8MB cache for the rig in my sig. It was considerably faster than the two drives in this system that had 2 MB cache. Plus, the 160 gig with 8 MB cache has a 3 year warranty, which is an awesome deal.
 
I'd head to office max and get 2 80gb 8mb WDse drives, but they are probably all out.

Yea i would imagine they sold out with the first few minutes of the store opening. I wouldn't of wanted one anyways because they are too small for what i use. I prefer the 160GB-200GB sizes.
 
well the above mentioned perfiormance increase goes well with the RAID use, the 3 year warranty is a BIG plus


however, IF your using a RAID controller with a large cache (which onboards dont typically have) or more importantly this is a second drive that would be a match to a 2mb cache WD you already have Id get it.

Having matched drives would out weight any other consideration for me
 
Office max is doing rain checks on those 80GB drives... I got 2 rainchecks, but there were already about 50 other people who had rain checks.

Good part about the rain check, if the drives come in after the rebates expire, you will only pay $20 for the drive and not have to deal with the rebates.

Also, bring the ad into Circuit city, I got the drive for $100-$40 MIR-$40 CC gift card. Not quite as good as $20 cash, but I spend plenty of money at CC so the gift card won't be a problem.

WD no longer offers 3 year warranty on their SE drives unless you pay them $14.95. Found this out after buying a 250GB drive and calling them up. Bastards!

8MB cache is worth it IMO.
