So I'd like to start a survey for all widescreen monitor owners. Please submit the name of your monitor, video card, and whether aspect ratio works with 8.3 drivers (as in 4:3/5:4 resolutions successfully receive black bars on the left/right of the image).

Form:

Monitor
Video Card
Works/Fails

Thank you.

Dell 2407
Radeon 3870
Fails at any vertical resolution of 1600 or higher. Actually, it only works at some resolutions, period. It's weird.

Doesn't work for 1080p. I get the same before and after scaling was in the drivers. I am on an Olivea 47" TV. No matter what I set the scaling too (including off) I get extra space at 1080p surrounding my entire image. In other words black bars top/bottom and left/right. Again, this is at 1080p. Weird because this is a 1080p set. The really weird thing is when I set it to "fill screen" (middle option) all resolutions go to un-used space, similar to the 1080p setting. This leads me to believe I will never be able to fix this. Why won't 1080p (1920x1080) fill my screen? Is my TVs native resolution more than 1080p? If so, not by much because the next higher res won't display (maybe it will with the scaling haven't tested).

Why won't 1080p (1920x1080) fill my screen?
What input are you using, an analog one like VGA or component, or DVI/HDMI? An analog input can cause what you're seeing.

I'm using HDMI cable.

One end is DVI (into computer) the other is HDMI (into TV)

Thx

Samsung 226BW (1680x1050 native) - DVI
X1800GTO
Works

"Maintain aspect ratio" works with every resolution I have tried, in every available aspect ratio - 4:3, 5:4, 16:10 and 16:9, both on the desktop and in various games.

Naturally, I received my new 9600GT yesterday (the purchase of which was primarily prompted by lack of fixed-aspect scaling on my X1800GTO - performance is still fine), and went home to find out that ATI had finally responded to the years of requests and complaints. Still, AU$200 for a 9600GT is a pretty good deal, it should last me for a couple of years, and the X1800GTO is going into my server (and tertiary gaming machine) with a 19" widescreen, so fixed aspect on it is still useful.

I come back to the hardforum only to see that ati still makes crappy drivers.

not like nvidia makes better... but, at least the same issues arent persistent after 3+ years.

my monitor itself does perfect 1:1 scaling it seems. still this isnt a substitute

i have had WORSE results using omegadrivers for getting things to scale and then re-size back to desktop.

my ati cards are great except for showing graphics

Now I can finally switch back to ATI since I have a Dell 3008WFP and I was worried about the aspect ratio problem.

Toddw, if you go into scaling options in the Catalyst control centre you can adjust that to fill the screen. Make sure you have justscan, or 1 to 1 pixel mapping or whatever it is called on your TV enabled.

I'm gonna try it on a 1680x1050 (4:3) and 1920x1080 (16:9) next week and post my results. I was wondering why my HDTV doesn't show 1080p correctly for my PC (when using Catalyst 8.2).

Westinghouse 22" Widescreen
Video Card 3870
Works with 1680x1050 resolution doing 1280x1024.

57" HDTV - still be tested

Since I'm waiting on my 8800GT's RMA I got a chance to mess with my ATI card:

Samsung 225BW (DVI, 1680x1050)
X1800GTO
1280x960 (4:3) and 1280x1024 (5:4) work, have not tried other resolutions
XP SP3

One thing I've noticed is that the GPU scaling is sharper with the X1800, but I can see repeating patterns in the interpolation whereas the 8800GT is softer with almost no repeating patterns. It's hard to say which I prefer, but for readability I do like the sharper scaling. Strangely, the X1800's scaling seems to induce a tiny bit of lag or it could just be slightly lower framerates. Far from unplayable though. Later on if I have time, I'm going to see if it works with the 9700 Pro.

I tested all scalling options and have no troubles working with 1:1 option and with scalling while keeping aspect :
1680x1050 with 1:1
1600x1200 with keeping aspect option (black bars on left/right)
1024x768 scalled to 1600x1200 with keeping aspect (black bars on left/right)
Tested on Vista Bussiness 64 and XP SP2.

I never had any scalling options when connecting through D-sub but that was on 8.2 so maybe new ones change that too.

I reported success earlier but I have a second computer connected to my Dell 2005FPW via D-sub and image scaling is NOT indicated for 8.3s. My guess is it's only valid for digital input (since it resides in Digital Panel/Attributes of CCC).
