7MC Video stuttering

I recently formatted my HTPC, which was previously running Vista + Mediaportal, and installed Windows 7. I followed the guide posted here, and only installed the basics:

- Windows 7 Pro x86
- Mediabrowser
- Metabrowser
- Haali
- CoreAVC
- FFDShow
- VSFilter
- Firefox

plus the ATI video drivers.

I'm enjoying the setup so far, but I keep running into stuttering issues. I run a WHS on a wired gigabit network, and have the shared folders added to Mediabrowser. I also have one shared folder (new downloads) added to 7MC's video library. My folder structure is just like in the sticky, and the files have all been run through Metabrowser and have metadata.

I'll be playing (streaming) a video file, and while watching the video will start to stutter, stop, and while the audio continues, the video will then play catch up. This happens randomly, and only lasts 5-10 seconds. Sometimes it'll happen a few times while watching an hour long TV show, other times not at all.

I tried running resource monitor next to the video window, and did notice that right after the video starts playing catch up, the network utilization jumps up. I'll be averaging around 1-2mbps and it'll jump up to 6, and then immediately come right back down. The CPU, memory, and disk usage do not seem to spike.

I'm at a loss with why this would be happening, and the resource monitor doesn't show any program jumping in network utilization, only the overall number. If it helps, so far I've been noticing this with xvid files, but will still have to try some x264 and see if those are affected.

Anyone ever experience this or have any ideas?

Good read, had never heard about that. I'll have to have the WHS task manager open while watching stuff to see if the stuttering coincides with that process starting.

FWIW, I watched a x264 movie followed by an xvid tv show last night, and it didn't stutter at all.
