Will this work and do I need a bridge?

Just got a 7990 and can pick up a 7970 for $110 and thought maybe 3 way Crossfire.

Yes it'll work and you'll need a crossfire bridge.

That being said, make sure you have a quality high wattage PSU to power it because the 7970s are power hungry little things.

I'm using an RM1000 but thinking of switching to a Seasonic.

I'm using hx1000i and the power usage in watt given by corsair link 800-900 watt. I'm on Matrix 7970 plantinum crossfire with Asus HD7990 ( water cooled )

Please remember that 7990 does not have UEFI enable bios. Therefore it should setup as second gpu if you go for uefi setup
