I recently received a 7990 and it's pretty great, but as expected it runs hot. When gaming it tends to be at 81c. Fans are a touch loud as well. I was wondering if there was anything I can do to cool this guy down besides water cooling? I do not have any budget for water cooling. Thank you in advance for any replies!

I would say sell it and get a gtx970 or gtx780
While it does run hotter, why would I want to sell it and buy a less performing card? Especially the 970? I'm not a big fan of Nvidia for what they pulled....

maybe clean it and apply GOOD paste. that should knock off a few degrees.

It's ok, a few of us still have common sense. Some people are blinded by their devout fanaticism (bordering religion, really) and I can't help but feel so sorry for people still buying the 970.

As for your original question, since watercooling is out of the question, your only option is to reapply a new TIM as Arctic Accelero does not make any custom cooling solutions for the 7990.

i think xfx & powercolor did custom coolers for the 7990, you can look for them, but probably hard to find by themselves. I'd recommend refreshing the thermal paste as well, though 81C isn't bad really. I probably wouldn't bother until 85C.

Quick search brought up this video using NT-H1 :

Seem to drop it a good few degrees.

Thank you very much for the replies! I watched the youtube video of Simon The Geek and I feel confident I can manage to replace the thermal paste. I only have Arctic Silver 5 right now. Good enough? Or will it be much more beneficial to get the Noctua or something else?

Tonight I replaced the compound with AS5, but so far am not impressed. In fact, I'm disappointed. First round of Heaven I was around 78c for the majority of the run, but towards the end I was at 81c. 1440p, 8x AA, Ultra Telle. About midway through the second run I was at 85c.

Should I have waited a certain amount of time before applying the compound? I also have Arctic Silver Ceramique. Should I try that instead?

~84 degrees C is a typical load temp for those gpu cores. As long as its not getting up to 100 its fine.

AS5 does have a noticeable cure time. Give it a week or two before deciding to replace it again.

I wasn't sure if there was a 'break in' period for this. I'm not sure if I'll be keeping the card. It's performance is incredible, but it's a little loud for my liking. Too bad there aren't replacement fans of a higher quality.

Pretty much this. There is better thermal paste out there when it comes to cure times, but AS5 is still a very good performer once your past the cure time.
