Hi

I am unsure what to do here..so i need alot of help.
Also please keep it simple because im all cunfused from to much reseach on this issue.

I am looking for new gfx card and i found 2 different cards but i dont know what to choose.
The price dosent mater cuz i saved cash for this project.

http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4102

or

http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7970-Lightning.html

I noticed the MSI has a littel more clock speed and better clock options with some plugins ports. But i was more interested in the cooling and noise parts.

Also here is the bigger issue.

I use 3 samsung 245B screens with the white dvi ports, so thats why i need some adapters. But these adapters comes in many forms and brands. I need a minidisplayport adapter to Dvi, and i have no clue what to choose becauus esome of em are active and passive and single or dual linked...cheap and expensive.

What does all that mean and what do i need to make my eyefinity run with these 2 bastards cards ??

Atm i have a ati 5870 card with 2 dvi ports and then i use a accell adapter from displayport to dvi like this.

http://www.multi-monitors.com/product_p/b087b-002b.htm

So my guess is that i need 2 of these just with minidisplay ports to dvi...but they are actualy expensive compred to all the other adapters, so do i realy need this or can i use any minidisplay port adapter ?

Honestly the simplest thing is going to be to go with the MSI 7970. Unfortunately, this card doesn't come with dual link dvi (higher than 1080p resolution is impossible or going past 60hz impossible), but in your case it will be fine. You can hook up two DVI ports to two monitors and then use that active displayport adapter you already have on the other monitor.

That will be the easiest thing you can do. The Gigabyte card, you will have to buy an HDMI to DVI adapter, which is cheap, so there you go. The lightning card will give you more bang for your buck, especially at a mere $30 difference.

Alright. First off, those monitors should be fine with SINGLE LINK. What that means is, if you buy the MSI 7970 Lightning, you will need NOTHING ELSE NEW, except for a miniDisplayPort to DisplayPort cable (should cost like $5).

Then you run 2 monitors off of DVI, and 1 off of mDP to DP to the adapter that you have which makes DVI to your 3rd monitor. :)

Edit: I'm too slow :D (note that Single link does 1200p, which is technically higher than 1080p, but it won't do any standard resolutions higher than that)

Oh that's right. These monitors have a DP input.

So yeah, you get the lightning and don't have to worry about anything hehe. All you MIGHT need (if you don't already have one) is a DP cable.

What does active and passive then mean

Active changes the signal, passive just rewires it. Passive is just a cable with different ends, while active requires the USB plugin for power.

In terms of usefulness, Active is required for Dual Link DVI (which you don't need) and on older cards for eyefinity (hence why you have an active). I believe on newer cards you don't need an active for eyefinity, but it shouldn't matter because you have an active one anyways.

Why do i need a dp cable ? all my screens is dvi ports..and i actualy only needs a hdmi adapter if i choose the lightning..because i dont want to change the dvi adapter each time i need to use my tv out...Thanks for all the good help..keep it coming if i should know anything before i buy :D

Get the lightning and some DP cables from monoprice for your monitors. You won't have any tearing issues if you use DP inputs for all three monitors, although some have said the recent AMD drivers fixed this with 7970's.

But why do u all say i need display port cables when i dont have any dp ports ?? i ONLY have dvi and the lightning card have minidisplay port..

Why the dp cables ??

Woops, saw the post above and thought your monitors had DP. With eyefinity you need to use at least 1 display port input so pick up a active DVI to mini DP adapter and use dvi for the other two monitors.

The lightning is good because it has many DP inputs so people can use DP for all three of their monitors whether it be using adapters for all of their monitors or normal DP cables if their monitors have DP inputs. When you mix DP with DVI you may get some tearing on the screens, but using DP for all the monitors solves the problem.

I'd go with the lightning personally. Also, you can use your existing adapter just get a miniDP to DP adapter. Should be inexpensive.

Not all active adaptors needs USB power... they should, but they don't have.
I have an active adaptor that doesn't have an external power.

Ok so here is what i understand..

I will buy the lightning 7970 card

And then i connect 2 of my screens to the 2 dvi ports, then i get a miniDP to DP adapter/cable incl the gfx pack that i can use to my own accell adapter.

"Your link dident show anything but the main site."

And for the final then i buy one of these for my HDMI for tv out

Danish pages :)
But the picture should say it all

http://www.av-connection.dk/?PGr=4325&ML=1729

http://www.av-cables.dk/mini-displayport-hdmi/mini-displayport-til-hdmi-adapterkabel-m-lyd.html

(This one is more expensive but incl sound and is also som accell.
It cost like 50 $ )

So with all this then i should be fine with eyefinity and my hdmi setup.

I use to make hotkeys in catalyst controle center to change screens setup when i play games or using the the tv out to watch movies. So thats cool.

I wish i had 3 screens with DP ports due to the tearing..but i rather spend money on the gfx card for a start. My screens are also old.

Btw have a look on my current setup.

Yeah the eyefinity part looks good to me, 2 dvi and 1 mini dp using the two adapters/dongles.
