7970 x-fire bottlenecking?

I have a i7-920 o.c. stable at 4.0 ghz. 12 gigs of ram running at 1500 mhz.

I just recently threw in 2x HD radeon 7970 reference cards inside and found very little performance gain over my single gtx 680.
Both show that they are working properly in gpu-z, but I find it hard to believe that I'm barely beating a single gtx 680.

Any thoughts?

1920x1200 is my res. the gtx 680 is giving me 70-80
the x-fire setup is about 75-90 fps.

I wouldn't be so upset if it stayed at 90 frequently, but the dips are even worse
than the 680 by itself.

and for those who are wondering, yes x-fire is enabled. I know battle.net games
don't scale well with x-fire/sli setups but the 2x6870 I used to have before I sold them
gave me about the same performance as the 7970's. Its quite frustrating.
 
What are you running the Uncore frequency in your chip? The last couple of days, I have found that with my 7970's, when I raised the Uncore, I received a big boost, and it took some bottleneck off my 980X to where I am getting constantly higher gpu usage in programs.
 
Where can I find the uncore frequency? or do you mean gpu frequency? if you do its at 925 mhz
 
Depending on the mobo, its the Uncore clock ratio, or UCLK frequency or radio.

If you use CPUZ, its reported as the NB Frequency on the memory tab.
 
Oh ok for some reason when you said chip, I thought you ment the graphic chip lol! My NB frequency is:3053.00 mhz
 
Raise it, and see what happens. You might need to up your VTT voltage for stability. Try to get to over 3600 and see what your cards do.
 
WoW still runs like shit even though I have 7950 crossfire, it doesn't use crossfire I think. I get 50 to 75 fps if I have view distance on Ultra. It's a 10? year old engine so it's not exactly optimized.
 
Check your scores with 3DMark 11 and see if they're in line with other crossfire rigs on an i7-920.
 
Yeah I agree with the above poster. Once you hit the 2560x territory, dual GPU solutions would be useful.
 
but he is still seeing 100% GPU usage. doesn't make sense why he wouldn't see better frames...
 
Well, it still doesn't make sense that both cards are at 100% usage because my cards are only at like 40% usage while playing WoW.

No. They added some new features to the engine to help, but for the most part its completely cpu dependant.

OP if you are looking at wow, you are super cpu bound. Get a higher resolution screen(s) and you will see a huge difference.
This review says that there is only about a 12 fps difference between a gtx 590 and crossfired 7970 at about your resolution. Keep in mind that this is Cataclysm and since then its become even more cpu bound with higher polygon counts and higher resolution textures that lean on the cpu for the math.

I played with bios until it gave me a stable solution and although I didn't get 3600.00 I did hit 3450.25 over my previous mark. This was definitely a increase in performance with steady fps over 100 at 1980x1200 at AAx16 ultra settings (for those who were wondering about AA). The dipping or micro-stuttering for some was a low at 82 fps. Which is Phenom' for my setup.

I believe some of the graphic engine design was redone for the expansion specifically. Some things like character modeling between the new race and old are just very apparent.

Sorry for not being specific enough but I was generally talking about fps in wow. In other games and DEFINITELY in benchmarks the x-fire just whoops on a single gtx 680 as expected. MORE now so with raising my NB frequency. I'm completely satisfied with the results with that tip alone.
