7970 Temps?

So I've installed my water cooling gpu block to my 7970, and I'm getting 48ºC full load, and 28ºC at idle

My WC setup is running at its lowest settings. (lowest pump flow, lowest rpms radiator fans)

Are those good temperatures good compared to air heatsinks?
 
I will hit 80-90c full load with fan on auto in a ft02

@ 1125/1575

I only have a Core i7 and the vid card in the water loop
btw: the water block is an XSPC Universal GPU water block
 
There are tons of different variables at work here, but my WCing temps on m 7970 are about 34C idle and 45C load. So I don't think your temps are bad. I'm curious why there is a bigger variation from idle to load compared to my temps, but like I said, tons of variables.

For reference, I have my 7970 on Swiftech MCW82 universal block (it's jury rigged in there with a copper shim, so not the most efficient setup) and I get 48C under full load @ 1125/1600MHz (clocks on stock voltage). This is under probably 27C ambients with a dusty case but a very unrestrictive/high flow loop. I would expect the XSPC block to have better performance, but there are more than enough variables here to be within the margin of error.
 
Well, the XSPC universal gpu blocks are not compatible with the 7970
I had to get a small gpu spacer (shim) in order to get it to work.
 
Then we're in the same boat and very comparable. It'd probably be a better comparison to measure rise above ambients, but eh, overclock the heck out of it and go play games/mine/have fun :p.

I have a XSPC 480 with 4 fans (I still have to install the other 4 :p)
 
Still seems a wee bit high. Maybe your shim isn't make good contact?

I have a pair of 7950's that I rigged with a Thermaltake Water2.0 Performer and they only get up to 55°C on the hottest day (~92°F).

What pump are you using?
 
Those temps look fine to me. Since it's a universal WB, I'd be more concerned with the VRM temps if you're planning on overclocking.

VRM's are the power MOSFET's, not vRAM, i.e. video memory. Here's a pick of how I cool my card:

You can see I have copper sinks on the RAM but I also have a row of smaller heatsinks that cool the MOSFETs. While you may be able to get by at stock settings with no VRM cooling (I wouldn't recommend it though), you will quickly damage your card if you try to overclock without any cooling on the VRM's.
 
Oh! yep. I've noticed that the stock heatsink had some thermalpads for those, so I've managed to place heatsinks on top of those too. :)

I'll put a fan to cool those heatsinks though
