7970 Overclocking Anomaly

Ok this is weird, I was overclocking my 7970 and was having issues with stability at 1.2Ghz namely the game/application would crash unigine/farcry 3 and the clocks would be stuck at 500 core and 150mem. This was all with Trixx, upping voltage had no effect.

Anyway today I uninstalled Trixx, installed MSI afterburner and enable stock overclocking via the xcl flag. My card has a stock vddc of 1.256 and although I'm unable to change the voltage in afterburner I tried again with 1.2 ghz at the stock voltage and weirdly it is stable so far, before I couldn't run unigine for longer than say a minute but I've been running now for around 15 minutes at 1.2ghz

The only thing I can think is different other than using a different OC application is that i disable ULPS in the registry.

Several things could have happened - breaking PowerPlay (disabling ULPS) can add stability; ambient temps can be lower today and stabilize your overclock; Afterburner places more nicely with your card. As long as it's working, all for the better, just make sure you stability test again.

I tested again yesterday and today for 30 minutes in unigine and over 3 hours in far cry 3. Can I ask what you use to test for stability, I haven't noticed any artifacting and it no longer crashes in battlefield 3.
