7970 Overclocking advice

Just started messing around with my Sapphire 7970 OC with boost. Comes clocked at 950 and allegedly "boosts" to 1000MHz and boosts the memory as well. I have no idea how to validate that it's actually doing that. Afterburner always just reports 950MHz. The card overclocks very poorly but I suspect that's because it's running at 1.025V as reported by Trixx, or 1.016 as reported by GPU-z. Should I up the voltage and increase the core clock? What's a good voltage? Would it be easier to me to BIOS flash with a bios at a higher voltage?

Feedback would be helpful.

I got the same card I don't know what it is either. Seems I can't passed 1080 core and 1600 mhz memory. oh well...

On a lighter note, Gen3 on the Evga FTW board I just picked up seems to be working nicely. Seeing tangible gains.

OP what app did you check with. furmark or msi kombustor will mostly throttle the clocks. Normal apps like Heaven 3.0, BF3,Crysis 2, 3D Mark 11 should run at 1000 mHZ. When you overclock be sure to max out the power control to +20% in whichever overclocking app you use.

Do not flash BIOS. Use sapphire trixx. increment voltage in small increments of 0.05v. so from stock 1.025 voltage go upto 1.075v, 1.125v and so on. What matters most is temps while overclocking. use HWinfo32 to log GPU core and VRM temps. core temps below 70c and VRM temps below 90c under load should be your goal. so whatever is possible within those limits go for it.
 
There are a couple of different cards

The 7970 OC edition does not have boost.

Stock is 950, It has a second bios clocked at 1000/1450 with a higher vddc.

You need to flip the switch on the board.

The card with boost is not the OC eddition.

That having been said, if you have the boost version, as soon as you change the clocks, boost is disabled.

The side effect of this is that it runs at stock vddc, where boost increased it for you.

My OC eddition runs at 1.17 on the OC bios, so id give that a try and see how high you can clock,

From what ive read, you should be safe up to 1.3v.

I'm up to 1185 on the core now @ 1.2v. These cards have excellent cooling. Memory doesn't want to seem to cooperate. 1550 or I see artifacts.
 
yeah, i cant move my mem past stock oc (1450)without artifacts.

doesnt matter really, mem oc has negliable effect on fps.
 
Blue PCB. The one in the link. I don't know if it's dual BIOS, but you have to flip the switch to get the boost. The card will default to 1000 Mhz.
