hoping not to start a flame ware but realize it will probably happen.

i have a 7970 that oc's very well. 1220/1775 (maybe better on 920 water cooling).

just bought a 680 oc windforce that does 1265/1700.

i game at 5760x1080 and loathe multi gpu setups.

need to keep one.

680 positives:
MUCH quieter. no 3 screen tearing. surround is slightly more polished than eyefinity. oc's well. can play witcher 2 in surround, currently doens't work in eyefinity.

negatives: pours heat into the case, mobo gets much warmer than before. not quite as fast, although is not a big hit on actual gameplay. oddly enough seems to have more cpu utilization (79% max vs. 65% max on the 7970)

i could sell the 680 and buy a antec kuhler and mount to watercool the 7970, thus putting up with tearing and less polish in exchange for raw frames. but would also lose out on witcher 2 3 screen goodness.

what would you guys do? i figure net dollars would be fairly equal keeping one or the other.

thanks for advice guys.

You sound like you already have your answer. You don't like screen tearing (me neither). You like surround. As for the added heat in the case: what kind of difference?

probably 15 degrees on the motherboard reading under HWiNFO64. yeah, i obviously like the 680 and the polish, but something about a hell of an ocing 7970 on water sounds nice too. the [H] in me admires the raw FPS. :)

Sounds like you like the 680 better subjectively, but you are wrapped up in the raw FPS number for some reason. Both cards are wicked fast, so if you like the look/feel of the 680, just keep it. The motherboard temp isn't going to make any difference unless it causes your CPU to throttle or crash, so I wouldn't worry about it.
