7970 Load Temperature Observation (and Question)

Hey guys. So I have the XFX 7970 Core edition (925/1375). I flashed the BIOS over the summer to Gigahertz Edition (1050/1500). At that time I was gaming in 1920x1080. Load temperatures rose from about 73-74 to 76-78. Wasn't a big deal to me. It's run perfectly for months, and still is.

However I've recently upgraded to 2560x1440p monitor and that's the resolution I now game in. Load temps in Planetside 2 push my card to 81 degrees (20 minutes of sustained play and I'm 80-81 degrees).

Question: Is this pushing it the card too hard? Is this temp level dangerous?

Downclocking my card to 925/1375 drops my stress temps back to around 78-79. Not a huge difference.

I don't know much about voltages. At 1050/1500 GPUz shows VDDC Idle 0.846. Under load VDDC hits about 1.152. Is this too high? I don't know anything about voltages.

Should I reflash my bios back to the old stock version, do ya think? Am I fine at 81 degree temps for long durations of time (3-hour Planetside 2 sessions).

Idle temps of the card are fine. It's idling at 32 degrees right now.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

What are the specs of your system? MB, case, etc.
 
Intel i72600k 3.4 OC to 4.2ghz
8 gigs of corsair 800hmz PC3-12800 9-9-9-24 DDR
A couple of OCZ Agility 3 and Vertex 3 SSD drives
Mobo is an MSI Z68a. The CPU and RAM overclocking is just done with the MSI Genie.
Case is an Antec but I can't recall the model, power supply is also antec 750. New Power supply going in next week, Seasonsic 1050w. I am gonna crossfire this card with another 7970 core edition (which I don't think I'l be flash upgrading)

What was wrong with the 750 Antec, or did you need the 1050 for quad cf?

I would flash it back, and run them together. Depending on your case, it could be airflow. Some cases have a side or internal fan that blows on the video cards and really brings the temps down. I usually will put a 120mm fan above or somewhere near to give it extra cooling.
 
yeah, those temps are fine. don't worry about it. i try not to go above 84-85c with my cards.
 
My 7970 OC runs about 83c with fan speed around 68%, would like it to be under 80c but the stock fan is way too loud, louder than even my old 5970. These cards are built to overclock and last a while under these temps I believe, if something goes wrong, still got a warranty.

Yeah, thats why I put a fan to help cool the card because the stock fans seems to get pretty loud like over 50%.

Tried flashing it back yesterday, getting an error that my subsystem doesn't match or something. Apparently the Ghz bios makes it so that my card won't accept flashing back to my old bios. Won't accept the original XFX 7970 Core edition bios.

As for the 750 Antec, I've read the 7970 Ghz editions can each draw into the 265-290W range (overclocked).. add 2 solid state drives, overclocked (and overvolted) CPU and ram, + a 7200rpm drive and dvd rom.. a Xonar ST sound card with amplified headphone outs.. and consider natural capacitor degradation over time.. I'd be running at or near full capacity easy, at 750.
Most likely over (I did that caluclator web site thingy a while back, and it said I was around 840 with all t hose things).

AMD recommends at least an 850watt for crossfired 7970s, on their page. The Seasonics are supposedly really good. I've got an MSI 7970 sitting home unopened, awaiting arrival of that new power supply.
 
I bitcoin mine with my two 7970s. Its pretty hard to keep temps under 80 but ive done by lowering voltage from 1.175v to 1.09v 79c 50% fan 24x7 for months.
 
75-80C is pretty normal. I bitcoin/litecoin mine on mine as well. And will see 80C from time to time.

Lately with winter they will be under load at 75-76C.
 
If you are running 80+c with one card, you'll likey have heat issues running two of them. My Sapphire 7970 OC never gets over 75 even at 1200 Mhz. I would look into a better/bigger case if you have room for it. I used to run an Antec p182 and switched to the Rosewill Thor V2, and the difference is night and day.
