7970 issue, driver related?

for some reason my 7970 has a problem with screen tearing. If I have v-sync on it does not do it, but v-sync makes games VERY un-enjoyable. Happens in bf3, unigine, and Dirt3. all work just fine with v-sync on. But bf3 specially tends to have frame drops here and there below 60 with v-sync on and I'm hoping to avoid most of that by being able to disable it. I used drivers 12.2, 12.3, now currently on beta 12.4. Rest of system specs are in my sig.

Are you forcing it in the control panel or leaving it as application controlled (ie vsync option within BF3)?

Also what other options have you tried in CCC, such as disabling or enabling some of the 3d options??

Another thing you can try, is go to the your monitor settings in CCC and toggle the enable gpu scaling option on and flip between the should be 3 options of scaling to full panel etc and/or the 2 extra options being reduce dvi frequency as well as alternate operational dvi mode. I know my buddy was getting alot of mouse lag/tearing no matter what he died till he toggled the gpu scaling and poof issue went away(not sure why)

I havent messed with any ccc settings yet, the vsync options i used where in game ones. This is my first card/build since my old pentium d/8800gt there are more settings then I could of imagined back then haha. Well off the play with more settings I go. Ill update what happens.

I'm not really sure you understand how vsync works. Also, what do you mean when you say vsync "makes games VERY un-enjoyable"? I'm also not sure what you mean when you say you have "frame drops here and there below 60". If you're saying your framerate drops below 60 fps, that has nothing to do with vsync. It doesn't do anything when your framerate is below the refresh rate of your monitor, so you are always going to experience some tearing when this happens and there's nothing you can really do about it short of lowering your IQ until your framerates are consistently above 60 fps.

I know how it works, but lets say I am running at 90fps. A explosion happens and my frames drop to 70fps. It is still well above the 60fps my screen will display. Now lets say I have vsync on and that same explosion happens. My frames would drop from 60fps to say 50fps, because the gpu is having to play catch up because it was only running at 50%.

When I say VERY un-enjoyable, the game just looks down right ugly looking like it is trying to display 2 totally different frames ever about 100 vertical lines giving a "tearing" effect.

I have tried both dvi, and hdmi signals, both do the same. Dragon, I also went in and messed with the settings in CCC and none seemed to alter the effect.

:( that sux. I would play with the ingame settings then, with Vsync on you shouldn`t be getting tearing etc as its meant to remedy that. If the card massively outpaces the Hz your monitor can display or is way under it usually has nasty side effects. I do not know what else to say, the 7970 should easily be able to handle BF3 and other games fully maxed out, maybe just try dropping the MSAA some or instead of using the FXAA and MSAA in CCC drop one of them to see if it helps, beyond playing with settings I do not know what else to say. Maybe drop an email to cat dev team let them know what issue your having, they may have solution(after all it is a brand new card with a new arch)

On a 60Hz, yes maybe, on a 120Hz. no way, not maxed out. no even two 7970 cant handle constant stable framerate required on a 120Hz in BF3, and thats 90+ fps. my two 7970 can drop to under 50fps in worst case scenario in BF3.. (over the city on Sharqi, 64p in the heli, i think i saw 46fps)

Thats worst case, normally im playing at 90fps, which i have capped it to using afterburner.. But especially Oman and Sharqi are heavy maps.

i play on Ultra, 2XMSAA and MLAA.

These two statements are contradictory.

What I am saying is, the graphics card has a slight delay before it picks up and compensates for the things happening on screen. running without vsync on, the fps never drops below 60fps unless im looking at center parts of big maps where there is a LOT of stuff, which is very reasonable. prime example, vsync off in tank using outside view, I never see below 60fps, but with vsync on it will drop to the 50's or lower doing the exact same thing. This is not the main concern anyways. It is the frame tearing im seeing with vsync off.

I am about to re-install windows and see what that does for me.

I am starting to think I should forget 120hz and just get an IPS 60-75hz. BF3 isn't going to be playable at 120hz anyway so why bother?

To get around V-sync I use MSI Afterburner to limit my FPS to 120 (120hz lcd..)

I know it's not the same as Vsync, i.e. you can still get tearing, but I don't see any. And I avoid all the downsides of having V-sync on.

I haven't tested locking fps to 60 @60hz, I understand it might be different than 120hz and tearing might be super visible... but it's worth a shot.

Did you reset the gpu to factory default bewteen driver changes and run a proper cleaning i.e somehting like driver sweeper-uninstall cat manager-ccleaner to rid of reg hits-install new drivers?

Also Cat 12.3 came out yesterday. 120Hz should be quite doable, maybe just tone back one of the settings to get the FPS up, 90FPS at 120Hz could explain some of the tearing tone it back to get closer to the 120mark if possible, might help.

Is the 7970 powerfull, you bet, overclocking as well as not expecting miracles helps alot as well :p

Keep you nice shiny 120Hz monitor, just play with some settings and overclock the cpu/gpu if you have not to let them "breath" better. I know 120 is quite possible, im running medium/high with my rig and will get a near constant 65-76fps dips to maybe 58 and top of 92~ so with somehting like a 7970 you should easily be able to get in the 120+ range with the right settings(tweaks)

I did not use driver sweeper, however it was doing it since day one of having the card. After re-install of windows, the tearing is barely noticeable with v-sync off now. It is still there but I can at least kill someone hahaha.

List Resolution, system hardware and OS.
As for screen tearing thats odd.
I game a t 1920 x 1080 and with vSync on not a single game tears, although with it off I have no tearing either.

hardware is in my sig, I am on windows 7 pro. But like I said its almost all better, only thing messing with my system is Origin now. when its installed my mouse has a slight delay if I do touch it for a few seconds for it to start responding again.

Driver sweeper-ccleaner-uninstall cat manager-install new driver-launch driver and hit the "restore to factory defaults" in the CCC panel. This has helped me ALOT avoiding different issues between driver swaps, it is giving a fresh driver this way, NOT doing it like this there is always crap left behind which can often cause lots of different issues. In the case of the card example there was a memory coherency issue they fixed in a new driver, without getting rid of old driver and cleaning reg hits that coherency can still be present if not have new issues compounded on top of it.

At least now that you are at square one there is things to try, clocking, declocking, memory speeds etc. I am sure there is a fix for it, I 98% doubt that its due to your monitor running at 120Hz it may be with the responce time of said monitor or possibly other hardware bugging it, its hard to say, it really is.

Try lowering smoke settings they play a huge role in fps drops and don't change the textures of the game too much, reading this thread is making me have second thoughts about getting a 120 hz monitor though

I wouldnt go against a 120Hz monitor, all monitors act differently AND can be attributed to drivers(possibly) thing is a card the CAN hit north of 120FPS using the right settings will be very much held back by a 60Hz monitor. Tearing aside the 120Hz monitors are very much usefull to have, but to each thier own, there is also ALOT of choice in 60Hz monitors that do not cost alot and have terrific visual quality 120Hz are btter for motion though(for the most part)

I think personally just adjust some of the settings, forced AA, AF, smoke, textures, drivers, even the 2 extra settings I have with my 6k being MLAA and surface format optimization along with some of the other 3d settings i.e cat Ai, to high of a tesselation amount, forcing specific methods of AA etc can all have dramatic performance consequences. Try what you have the options of trying before you have an agro fit. I know at least for me the defered and AA used in BF3 play hell on my card as does blur(which I hate)
