7970 - Graphics Card Dimensions (length)?

trying to find out some of the basic card dimensions on the new 7970, specifically the length.

my case (TT Mozart TX) isn't terribly deep and it was a struggle to fit my old 5850 in the top slot of my CHV due to 240 radiator installed in front of case. the card by its self fit's ok but the 2 6pin power plugs are jammed hard up against the grill attached to the rad.

from the reviews i read on the 7970, the power connectors are on the top (rather than the end) of the card which should alleviate the problem.

the top 16x PCIe slot has about 26cm - 26.5cm (approx 10.5 inchs).
the 2nd 16x PCIe slot has a bit more room (no radiator to bump into), 29-30cm (approx 11.5 to 11.75 inches).

as anyone seen any card dimensions from the major card makers (Asus, Gigabyte, Sapphire etc).

tho my mildly oc'ed 5850 still does a good job, really like to get a new GPU. be nice to turn up all the eye candy @ 2560x1600.

You might expect, with all of these new features, performance improvements and specifications that the Radeon HD 7970 would be a huge video card. In actuality, it is exactly the same size as the previous generation Radeon HD 6970. In fact, the shroud covering the heatsink actually seems smaller. The design of this video card is exactly the same as the HD 6970 in shape and form. It is 10.5" long, same length as a Radeon HD 6970.

guess i'll have to wait on what some of the other board makers have dimension wise. 10.5 inch (wish length was given in mm) will be a squeeze. guess i could just use the bottom PCIe slot if i have to.

The 5850 was 9.5" or 241.3mm and I think the 6-pin plugs added about an inch. 10.5" is 266.7mm so, about the same as the 5850+6-pin plugs. You may want to wait and see how long the 7950 will be (maybe about 9.5").

yeah the 5850 i have in the top PCIe16 slot of my CHV just squeezes in (with the dual 6pin power plugs jammed up against my front radiator.

thanks for the conversion the only reason i mentioned the gripe about cards listed in inches is due to the larger unit of measurement. when inches is used, can often mean several millimetre either way (b/c some listed specs are rounded up or down). usually not a big deal with most PC cases unless you do stupid shit like what i did by plunking a radiator on the front 3 120mm fan intakes. case wasn't really designed to have a rad there.

you right tho, may need to wait till 7950's surface tho it wouldn't be Hard if i didn't try to jam a 7970 in there. you know, the type of kid sitting in the corner at kindergarten trying to force a square block thru a round hole of those pre-school spatial perception puzzles. that was me.

Just curious, you have a pic? I once used a 92mm fan + an adapter (which made a nice shroud) on a front rad because of spacing issues. This allowed the wires to get to the front PCI'e plugs without getting caught in the rad fan.

yeah that wouldn't work (tho a good idea) as the fan is on the other side of radiator (push config). the layout goes like this...
Case->>Fan->>Radiator+Grill.

Just being helpful. The only reason most places list the length in inches is because when a majority of Americans see Metric units, they become dumbfounded.

Looking at your pic, a 7950 should fit right in front of the rad. Is there a gap between the fan mounts and the case front bezel?

Yeah, wow, that's a tight fit. I'm not even sure a 7950 will fit in there. The 5850 was an entirely different product from the 5870 where as the PCB of the 6950 was pretty much the same as the one from the 6970. I haven't seen anything on which angle AMD is taking this time around, but we'll see soon enough.
