7970 crossfire clarification

I just set up crossfire last night with two xfx 7970's (FX-797A-TNFC and FX-797A-TNBC). Catalyst control center says that crossfire is enabled but it isn't getting any kind of information from the second card. No temps, fan speeds, clock speeds, nothing. I tried using hwmonitor, aida64 and speedfan and none of them are getting any kind of information either. Hwmonitor doesn't list any info for the second card, aida see's the card and gets information for a second or two before it zeros out, speedfan seems to think it can change the fan speed but it didn't actually do anything. My temps are all fine I think, the top card (FX-797A-TNFC, the core edition card) is idling at 39C. I guess I should mention that both cards do show up in device manager.

Is it normal to not get any kind of reporting from the second card? I know it's a stupid question, sorry. It seems to me that you would get sensor info from both cards under normal circumstances.

I'm assuming this is abnormal, so, any ideas for fixes? I did reinstall the newest catalyst driver but it didn't help. Should I user driver sweeper to completely remove and then reinstall the drivers?

I don't believe I have any hardware compatability issues but for clarity, this is what I'm running:

i7-950, not overclocked
gigabyte x58a-ud3r rev 2.0
xfx black edition 850w psu

Again, the cards are XFX reference style cards:
pci-e 16x slot 1 - Core edition 7970, FX-797A-TNFC
pci-e 16x slot 2 - Black edition 7970, FX-797A-TNBC

Windows 7 ultimate x64
12 gigs of ram

The cards are running the same bios versions. The difference should just be the clock speeds and in crossfire the faster card should change itself to match the clock of the slower card.

Any help would be phenomenal.

No, that is weird, typically you can see all the info from both cards. Maybe try cleaning drivers and reinstall ?

I thought so too.

I goofed, it wasn't aida that saw both cards it was gpu-z. If I'm on the sensor tab for gpu-z I get all the information from the core edition card. When I switch to the black edition card it reports for 2-3 seconds then the sensors all go to 0.

I think I will try the driver thing.

It's ULPS, disable it in the registry and you get all the info you want.

Yeah I had the same problem. Disabling that in the registry fixed that. Unfortunately nothing I've done has resolved the constant lockups I get running these things in CrossfireX.

I have the same issue in CCC. Does disabling ULPS effect anything else detrimentally?

Wel no, the faster card will not down clock to the same speed, CF can run independent clocks.

Wouldn't having different clocks just make microstutter that much worse?

Its depends on how much difference there is in the clocks, If i put one down to say 500MHz then yeah, its not smooth.

Overheating can cause one or more to throttle down to 500MHz, only BF3 has been able to do that, where its playing smooth as pie then it goes all stutter, have to make sure the fans are on full bast.
