7970 benchmarks leaked

That would be pretty sweet for the consumer for sure. Would most definitely light a fire under Nvidia's ass to get their competitive product to the scene. Lets hope.

If true, that's pretty good. Not too far off from 6990. And in Metro, it actually beats the 6990 and GTX 590!

If true, this has echoes of 2002 with the arrival of the Radeon 9700 Pro.:D

Would be nice but I dont trust the source. Looks like one of those sites that put up stuff like this to get ad revenue.

It would be perfect for the $350 range - $450 - $500, no thanks.

Prepare to be extremely disappointed if those are your expectations. Or be very patient.

Personally, I'll be enthralled if a single 7970 is 50% faster than a 6970. Something tells me that Big Leaps in processing power due to die shrinks (such as 4870 --> 5870) are a thing of the past.

Leaked benchmarks...'nuff said. Some of them were stating that Bulldozer is faster then Sandy Bridge :p

Until I see real cards with real tests, then any benchmarks done in Excel are only casus belli for fanboys of both camps.

Just small echoes. ;) I'd say 9700 Pro was a game changer (3 years of relevancy is nuts), these cards aren't.

I'd like to reserve further judgment until official benchmarks but I can't say I'm very pleased to see that ATI is still strong.

I dont percive any game coming out the next 3 years that will be a new crýsis in any way.
If it can run Bf3 then it will last for 3+ years.
load of games are console based.

You knew it was fake because it didn't include Crysis 1. Because I don't know anybody who has never said "Yeah, but can it play Crysis?" on new vide card hardware.

I don't understand any of the responses to this thread. Enguish puese?

They may be fake, but those numbers look about right based on previous releases. The next gen flagship card is usually just slightly slower than two previous gen flagship cards in cf (based on the 6990 numbers). Those benchmarks might be a little inflated, but I don't think they're out of the question.

Here we go with the over hyping again. With what happened with Bulldozer and Cayman last year you would think people would be more prudent with posting this stuff.

This is a die shrink, performance should be very good. However, these slides are fake.

Sweet. I still have my doubts as to ready the 28nm process is ready for production. It doesn't seem to ready enough for mobile GPUs which is where it would really have a lot of benefit but I guess it could be ready for enough for the much smaller high end discrete market. But sure, if these numbers a price are correct, I pick on up for my backup rig, maybe even do an Eyefinity setup.

I disagree. Modern cards are helped by stagnation of the graphical quality of games. You can easily get away with a 2-3 year old card nowadays like a 4850-4890. The 9XXX series from ATI was good, but it came at a time where significant leaps in graphical quality were happening which made them irrelevant much faster than you seem to remember.

Seen that graph going around for a while actually, words right from AMD (yeah, wish I had a link) have said the 7970 would be right below the 6990 so maybe..

Bulldozer.
CPU.
Completely unrelated product.
Completely different department of AMD.

You're completely right about Bulldozer, but do you remember Cayman last year? People were posting benchmarks of the 6970 being 50%+ faster than the 5870, decimating the 580, etc etc. The hype was astronomical, which -- if you go back and read most of the initial reviews of that card -- lead to massive disappointment among most people. [H] was one of the few places that praised the card as an inexpensive alternative to the 580 for high resolution gaming.

Performance will get a jump yes. Just do not be setting expectations high like doubling of FPS or more.

Referring to hype actually, so BD fits right into that area. New arch, smaller node, plus a native 8 core made people think it was going to be great and looked what happened. Calwen described exactly what happened with Cayman as well. I was on that boat actually when this was going on. Not doing it again.

well the 7970 will be below the 6990 but by how much :) and anyone whining about $500 for a card that beats $700+ cards and being a single card solution must be smoking something !! not that I'm saying the 7970 is going to be that good or that price.

Well, you shouldn't be surprised, as the HD 5870 when released, was able to match and outperform the more expensive GTX 295. The Radeon HD 4870 was able to match and outperform the more expensive HD 3870X2. Remember that the HD 6990 costs more because it is also more expensive to manufacture. I certainly doubt that the HD 7970 will outperform the HD 6990, but considering that it has les 33% less stream processors than the HD 6990, but they're also more capable and more powerful with higher clocks, similar performance may be attained.

I remember it kinda differently. People were optimistic until the specs leaked( 1536 shaders instead of the rumored 1800 or 2000), at which point most people realized it wouldn't be much faster than the 5870. It did significantly beat it in tessellation benchmarks though, sometimes by over 50%.

I remember a few people expecting everything and the moon on a stick from Cayman.

Like people who expect the Spike video game awards to one day become something that one day can be taken seriously.

In my opinion, that will not happen again. Nvidia had a major flop with the FX series (using DX9 that is). Nvidia has not messed up THAT badly since.

1920 4 way shader was thought right about the point of release for many people. The 1536 was overly thought of as a crippled Cayman or perhaps a lower end Cayman skew.

These are most definitely fake. I agree with some of the guys here - don't set your expectations too high or you may end up disappointed. I know I fell for the Cayman hype. I literally checked forums and chinese sites for new info every single hour. I would even wake up at night just to read new comments, posts and rumors on Cayman. It was ridiculous... never again. Take a wait and see approach ... wait for real benches.

If we calculate the amount of SP processors that Cayman has, which are 384 clusters compared to the 320 clusters that Cypress has, means that if we create an equation related to the performance of Cayman compared relatively to Cypress using the same VLIW-5 calculations, means that Cayman performs like a 1920 VLIW-5 GPU, so it would means that Tahiti will have 512 VLIW-4 processors or 2560 VLIW-5 processors if we put it that way. So that explains why Cayman isn't much faster than Cypress except in heavy tessellation scenarios.

Tahiti is full implentation of GPU core next architecture. I think most of you are expecting it to be a minor upgrade to 6970 when it comes core design. This is based on a totally new architecture while using the GCN 1D cores. You can't compare the two straight up. This is like going from a gtx 280 to 480 type of deal when it comes to architecture type.

Don't believe the hype. You're setting yourselves up for disappointment. Wait for actual real-world benchmarks. That being said, it doesn't hurt to start saving your pennies.

The only thing I am believing is that the wallet is in for some pain train.

QTF... just look at Bulldozer. I wonder if AMD is using the same advertising departments and personnel that they did for Bulldozer. If so, I call Bullshit on anything until we hear it from [H]ardOCP.

I hope Kyle will get his hands on 7970/50 very soon and give us some good news.
My 470 is getting raped and i want to play my B2K maps in their full glory...
