I just want to run 3 monitors, each with it's own screen, which would be extended. I don't want to use Eyefinity, as this is not a gaming task. I need three monitors for work.

I know you need an active port for Eyefinity, but Eyefinity isn't an "extended" desktop. From my understanding, Eyefinity is simply a way to get multiple monitors to work as one desktop.

Thanks.

You can choose whether to "extend" the desktop or "span" all three monitors when setting up Eyefinity in CCC (so yes, even an extended desktop is still Eyefinity).

You do in fact. I recently installed a 5000 series card at work for out security cam monitoring PC. I could do any combination of 2 ports with a passive adapter. (DVI, VGA, or DisplayPort.) But not 3. Got an active displayport to DVI adapter, and it worked. No restarting required, was detected in real-time.

Make sure in your actual monitor settings, on the physical monitor itself, the one that you have hooked up via displayport, you set to always send a signal. If you don't, whenever you turn that monitor off, it will rearrange your desktop. Really annoying...

If not for gaming, why a 7950?
