7950 GT

well if you remember there was a 7900GX2 before there was a 7950GX2. the GX2 is the thing that indicates whether it is a two gpu card or not. the 50 in 7950GX2 has nothing to do with it being a two gpu card. if the 7950GT makes you confused then that is your fault. :p
So you can seriously tell me the first time you saw "7950GT" without reading any articles....dual gpu never for a second crossed your mind? Also, 7900GX2 was a Dell (maybe Alienware) only type thing to give them first shot at quad-SLI and not really available in the normal retail channels.

No it did not. It is absurd to associate the "50" with dual cores. Also I seriously tell you that.

So, a question because of this. Since this is just slightly slower then a 7900GTX, it should run somewhere in performance between the 7900GT and 7900GTX. With the extra memory, I'm wondering if that would improve my performance enough at 1280x1024 over my current 7900GT to make it a worthwhile upgrade. I was thinking about going SLI, but buying this card is a more attractive option to me for a few reasons:

1. It should improve my gaming performance
2. It should be cooler and quieter then running two 7900GT's in SLI
3. Best of all, it would free up my current card to allow me to upgrade my LAN party box

Does that sound about right? I'm just wondering how much difference this card would make over my current VC.

Listen!

this is the 'new' 7900gt with hdcp thats all. I read in some article that they were gonna refresh the 79gt for hdcp but i guess that extra ram is a plus.

welcome 7900gt 512 ko, you join the ranks of the 7800gtx 512 and 6800ultra 512 as one of the bastard cards.

is it a smaller process? is that why it will be cooler?

I'm just assuming the one card with one GPU will be cooler then two cards. I could be wrong...

You'll see little to no performance increase in games from the extra memory. You will see a performance increase due to the higher clocks but there's no reason you can't overclock your current cards to the 7950's level. 550/700 isn't hard to get at all on a 7900gt (mine is doing 570/860, it'll be higher after I volt mod it :) ). So basically there's no reason at all to upgrade to the 7950gt if you have a 7900 already, unless you just like to waste money.

I had just assumed the 512MB made a difference at using AA and AF in graphics intensive games...

At 1280x1024 it's not not going to make a difference. Even at 1600x1200 with AA/AF in most games there seems to be little performance increase from the extra memory. :(

If you want to know how this card will perform then just look at current matchups of the 7900GT 512mb vs the 7900GT 256mb. From what I have seen when these two cards are at the same exact core/memory speeds the 256mb card is actually slightly faster....the only time the 512mb will be an advantage is at higher resolutions. I think the 512MB is a good idea for the GT I just don't understand why they chose the "7950" moniker which will only confuse consumers over something like "7900GT2" or even "7900GT 512".

it would be silly for Nvidia to make this a dual gpu card, because from clocks to pipes it would in all essence be a 7950GX2 then.. no reason to re-invent the wheel there.. seems like it's a just a competetively priced 7900GT with a little more default punch and HDCP, to add some compatibility with new DHCP DVD drives. Not too big of a deal considering most 7900GTs hit those clocks already, so Nvidia is just slapping that DHCP in and putting a "50" on the name. A poor name choice if you ask me, and I agree with Jomama, in that it's only going to confuse people into thinking it's a 7950GX2..

the 512mb does make a difference in some games. that difference is not always reflected in frames per second but it smooths out games like FEAR even at 1280.

when working with high quality (larger) texture sets at high resolutions it seems to help.

True, nVidia is turning into General Motors, 500 products so they can fill every niche. If it works, great, but look at GM right now, it isn't working :)

I think there's at least one other aspect at work here--this is probably (at least partly) nVidia's shot at re-engineering the 7900GT to address the notorious issues that created so many dead cards.

i think the point was that eVGA already has an overclocked 7900GT with 512MB ram. the only difference the 7950GT would add is the HDCP. :D
I know, I know.

But...evga hasnt said what the clocks of their 7950GT will be. Im thinking they will be higher just like all previous releases were....when compared to nvidia's reference design.

yes they will probably offer an overclocked version like they always do.

This card is very tempting as my 7800GTX (256MB) doesn't seem to have the power it used to. I am going to wait before upgrading to DX10 and this card may be able to hold me over for a while. I don't have the money for a 7900GTX (or higher) so this may fit right in. I would have to upgrade from this 480W power supply though >_<

The naming of these cards is stupid but at least it is easier to understand than Intel CPU numbers.

why would you have to upgrade your psu?

My current PSU (Antec Neo Power 480) seems to be struggling with my current setup.

Oh, does anyone know if this card is going to be single slot?

looking at your sig your psu should easily handle that. hell a 400watt psu shouldnt have any trouble.
