7900GT Supplemental Power/Driver Problem

I installed a 7900GT into a new PC running Vista Home Premium (first mistake...), and I originally didn't plug in the 6-pin supplemental power connector. I installed the latest nVidia driver, and after awhile in Windows an error message popped up saying that the card wasn't getting enough power, so it was going to dial back performance. I shut it down and then opened up the case again to connect the supplemental power using a Y-adapter that came with the card.

Now, when I boot into Windows, when the Welcome screen hits, the card goes nuts like it's not syncing, all diagonal mishmash on my screen. When I disconnect the supplemental power again, it boots up normally without any problems. I tried uninstalling the driver, but when I reinstall it, the same thing happens again. Has anyone seen anything like this before? I guess I could just leave the supplemental power disconnected, but I'd rather get full performance out of my card. Any ideas?
