7900GT Performance Issues...(Clock speeds)

I just wanted to check and see if you guys think that my 3DMark06 score seems good enough, or if there is anything wrong or not. I am having issues with games such as BF2 and HL2 not playing like they should...30-60 FPS in HL2 maxed on video settings and 30-50 on BF2 maxed settings.

Also, I have the eVGA 7900GT CO, is the KO better??

I hear so much about how this card pwns so well on the graphics aspect? Where is that comming from? Why does my 9800PRO seem to out perform this card in FPS etc? It's severely sketchy in HL2 and in BF2 sketchy in some spots.

A friend of mine has a 7800GT, and his FPS maxes out WAY more than this card could imagine.

Something preventing this card from doing what it should? I mean, I have this on a 12v rail all by itself.

My score is: 4427

Computer specs:
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ @ 2.210GHz
Asus A8N-SLI Motherboard
250 SATA WD HDD @ 16MB Cache
3.00G's of Corsair XMS low latency cache 2
eVGA 7900GT CO @ 552/900

On the card it says it can go to 500/1500, but I can't go past 900 on the memory clock frequency.

Let me know what you guys think. I have had a few issues with BF2 with lagging etc, and a few other games, but slowly adjusting to get better speeds.

Any tips?

I will help you out on a couple of points - for what my opinion is worth, most apps now report the memory clock at 1/2 (since the memory is DDR, you must double it to match the "speeds on the retail box"). So if this is the case with the way you are looking at it, you are actually running 1800mhz on the memory...which is way damn high.

I am not familiar with all the model numbers of CPUs, so off the top of my head I don't know if the 3500+ is dual core or not, but be aware that dual cores get better results in 3DMark06.

You could always try running 3DMark05 as well, and compare your score...just for peace of mind. I don't have alot of confidence with the way 06 is handling everything at this point.

Just offhand I don't think you're score is really that bad, if anything it may just be a tad bit low...however you may want to try a different driver version and just double-check that you have vsync disabled everywhere and all other game/benchmark/control panel settings on max as well.

Edit: almost forgot - the only real difference with the KO version is the cooler on it is updated...just what this means (outside of performance which is nothing) depends on who you ask.

I thought something was wrong with my rig until I saw your score...I got 4718.

Asus A8NE
Opteron 148@2.4
eVGA 7900GT KO superclock (580/1580)
2GB OCZ platinum pc3200 (2-3-2-5)
Seagate 7200rpm sata 160GB

Did you get a crawling slideshow in the cpu test? I was like WTF MAN.

That is completely normal... no matter what card you have you will always see <1FPS in the CPU tests.

Those scores are fine. And the reason the CPU test runs so slow is because it is rendering all the graphics with your CPU and not the GPU. It just goes to prove how crucial accelerated video is for gaming these days.

And Astaroth is right... the effective memory speed is twice of the clock speed you specify in Coolbits. If you can take it to 1800 mhz you're damn lucky.

Flask... your RAM is running at 3.00 ghz? You might want to check that ;)

The KO cards also have additional power regulation circuitry that adds to stability at higher clockspeeds.

Astaroth if he had said
Amd 64 x2 you would know it was dual core
the x2 is the keyword for dual cores
mines an Amd 64 x2 4200+

Yup, haven't had any trouble with mine yet (knock on wood) and even oc'd it runs a little cooler than my 6800GT that it replaced.

Actually it isn't, that was only in 05. They even said they lowered the graphics on the test so that the GPU would never be a limiting factor. It's just crazy AI and physics, plus the scoring and that map thing.

No they dont. The higher than nvidia reference vcore (1.45 vice 1.2) provides the added stability at higher clockspeeds.

Only other difference between the CO and the KO besides the clockspeeds is the KO has a cooler that covers the memory.

Also as a note 900Mhz DDR 1800Effective is not unheard of on the GTs. My autodetects at 1802 on the memory. My 7900GT KO SC runs artifact free at 650/1800.

I've got a damn KO and 2 COs next to me. The KO has additional components in the power regulation circuitry which is probably responsible for the 1.45v delivered to the core in 3D mode. The COs do not have these components, just empty solder pads where they would be.

Would you like photographic evidence?

You can even look at the backsides of the CO and KO cards at newegg (their photos) and see the difference.

Future CO edition cards from eVGA may end up having the additional components though, since they don't seem to be able to keep the current crop of cards operating stable at 1.2v in 3D, even at nVidia reference speeds.

Thing is, I don't see shit for performance from this card. I am getting the SAME exact FPS that I did with my 9800PRO.

Now, granted I get a little better quality walls and turf, but I just don't see this card being worth the cash that I spent.

I think I might just RMA this CO version and go for the KO or a damn 7800GT or GTX. Maybe even roll ATI. This is the second card from eVGA and the 7*** series that I have had this issue with. Not sure if maybe I expect too much from these cards but I doubt it.

The thing that fustrates me the most, is I had this problem with my machine before this and decided to upgrade to find out I will only get the same problems.

I had suspected the PSU being my issue and maybe it isnt giving enough juice to the card, but I just dont see that being the case. I have a 550W Antec TrueControl and its more than likely a year old at the max.

I'm having the same problem with my 7900 GT KO.

I'm getting great benchmark scores (~9000 in 3DMark05, 4300 in 3DMark 06, 150 fps in CS:S stress test), but I'm getting the same frames during actual gameplay that I got with my X800 XL.

Does anyone have an idea what the problem is?

I really haven't benchmarked in games (only 3DMark 05-06) but I know what you're talking about as it doesn't really seem "faster"...but I have the settings cranked up and it does look prettier without a performance hit.

edit- eVGA 7900GT KO Superclock btw..

Yeah, this issue really pisses me off, and I think others might be having this issue as well.

I would love to find out more. Maybe my PSU isn't good enough, but I figured 550W Antec was more than enough.

what games are u talking about?

HL2, and CS:S are CPU limited

crank the BF2 settings all the way up, or fear, or Oblivion
test with both cards

and then say its the same frames ;)

I have tested BF2, and EQ 2 etc. Both are giving 30-40FPS max, and EQ 2 really only 20-30.

Ok I stand corrected then. Would you mind posting a pic of the CO's I would like to compare them to my KO SC.
