I've been searching but can't find the max safe temp for a 7900gt. Anyone know it? I'm hitting 75 in ati tool and rthibl or whatever it's called.

edit: it's not artifacting

I hit 76 - 78C on my eVGA 7900GT Superclock under full load.

I wouldn't worry about it, the core itself is actually rated to some obscene temperatures in the hundreds of degrees range.

When I run ATITOOL and it shows 65c I can look in my properties and it is about 10c cooler so I don't know which one is right. But I would'nt worrie about 75c since they don't throtle until 130c.

I dunno about max safe temps but mine idles around 41 and I haven't seen it get over 50 under load. It's stock with the stock cooler too. I guess I have good case cooling.

That's pretty impressive even if you have a jet turbine blowing through your case... What card do you have?

Mine got up to 72C max with the stock cooler. It's really not a problem though, it's made to be able to handle that.

I didn't really like mine getting that hot due to it causing ambient temps increasing in my case and also the stock fan is noisy so I stuck a Zalman vf900 on it. Now my temps never go over 53C.

Not possible using stock cooling, your load temps are either WAY off or you are checking them wrong.....

yeah, you need to run the nvidia control panel thing in the background, leave it open to the temp section and alt+tab to it after using a 3d app for a while.. these cards cool down very fast.. checking the temp 5 secs after the app is off is not really checking the load temps..

Even that is not that good...the very INSTANT you drop the 3d app, the temps drop quite a bit, even faster than you can get to the desktop and see.....use a third party app like ATI Tool to monitor temps of the card, there are others as well.....but if you do it like that, take what you see and add at least 5c to 8c to the temp...it should be close.

no dude, your boarderline burnout temperature... thats not cool, i would tone down the clock speed if i was you....

I don't think so, I would worry if it got over 83c to 85c......under 80c is fine, just think how hot those cards run in OEM type silent boxes.....they truly are built to take ALOT more heat than any cpu could think of (except Prescott) :p

well, a cpu, at 82 degrees, quit on me. it was an old P3. so i would watch those temps.....

With all due respect, please don't give advice when you know not of what you speak.

These temps are perfectly normal for my card which happens to be an eVGA 7900GT CO SC (550/1580). Comparing it to your old P3 is ... quite silly. :)

Cant remember the exact forum (xtremesystems maybe) but a reliable person got an email from nvidia that said the safe max temp for the 7900 core is 85C.
Take it as you will, but I believe it.

CPU = NOT = GPU

The current GPU's can take lots more heat than the typical CPU......and an old P3 can't really be compared to the current GPU's :p

too true, but when you start getting that hot things = very = bad.

edit: yea ok, your right, did a little looking, the last card i had was a 6800gs, and if it got that hot i started seeing serios artifacts, but the less.... everything.... of the 7900 series, and its shrunk die makes for better thermal dissipation, and conduction... so yea it can get a little hotter, but i would watch it, thats still pretty hot.

when you read the temp on the P3, you're reading the case temperature (Tc; and it is not the PC case temperature). This is the hottest point on your CPU where it meets with ambient (either the HSF or just air)

nvidia's control panel reports the die temperature or the junction temperature (Tj) which is defined by manufacturers like TSMC based on different process they use. The upper limit is usually 125C
