7900GT fan dying...

I currently use an eVGA 7900GT that I bought sometime last October off of the [H] FS/FT forums. Unfortunately, I leave my computer on a majority of the day and game a good amount so the fan is dying. It's making noises, and I know that it is shortly going to bite the dust. Anyhow, I'm debating what I should do...

Normally, I would just update to a next gen single slot card, however there are no 8800s that are single slot configurations. I'm not sure what I should do replacement wise. I run a SN27P2 Shuttle, so if I want to go a dual slot I would have to sacrifice my Creative Audigy 2 ZS and use onboard sound. This may be an option, however my onboard sound experiences in the past have never been pleasant.

Another option that I was looking at is the 7950GT fanless XFX card. I haven't checked the dimensions on the card yet, but I believe this will fit. Otherwise, I'll probably end up just buying a new 7950GT and a new heatsink for my current card, which I'll give to my younger brother.

Anyone have suggestions? This is my second straight video card that has died in under a year due to fan failure, so the XFX is tempting, however I'm worried about overheating problems if I place that thing in a Shuttle.

Why on earth wouldn't you just strap an aftermarket fan to it? It's even covered in the eVGA warranty...

Even if he throws the old cooler away?
But that is what I would do.

You should keep the old cooler (they would replace the cooler if you sent it in for RMA, but I think this would be a waste of time), but the evga warranty covers everything as long as you don't physically damage the card (i.e. you don't snap the card etc.)

Replace just the fan in the heatsink and keep the current heatsink? Didn't know that was easily done. Anyone got a link to one of these after-market fans? I need a single slot cooling solution which is the tricky part.

Thanks.

VF900 by zalman is your best bet. I've had my 7900GT voltmodded to 1.55 since last august with the vf900. Here is a link.

EDIT: Just in case it wasn't clear, you're able to replace the entire heatsink-fan combo and still maintain your warranty.

I think the op was looking for a single slot solution, don't think there are any on the market right now for 7xxx series, I could be wrong tho.

I would get on the phone with EVGA and see if they can send you another cooler.

he bought it second hand, you normally need the original receipt to get RMA.

I didn't when my 7900GT died....eVGA overnighted me a replacement with the return shipping label in the box. I'd give them a call though, to see what's what.

Well it turns out I voided my warranty with eVGA because I unknowingly removed the sticker containing the serial number from the card. Needless to say, I'll be avoiding eVGA from now on even though it was my mistake they were not much help.

Anyhow, when the fan finally dies on this card, I'm considering upgrading to an 8800 GTS. The main game I play at the moment is WoW, however it would be nice to run it max settings on 1920x1200. Right now I can't have AA or AF on at that res with my 7900GT otherwise lag can be an issue during raids. Question is, with my current setup, is it worth the upgrade? My processor might need an upgrade to take full advantage of the 8800.

Yes I realize that, but I could take out my sound card and run onboard sound if I so desire. To upgrade or not to upgrade?

You guys all do realize that he isnt the original owner and wont be able to RMA the card... so the whole after market cooler issue is not important.

If I was you, I would try and find a cheap replacement fan and wait for 8900 refresh or perhaps even the 9XXX series. And I must say, if there isn't a single slot 8900 I will be royally pissed off at nVidia

I hate these new gargantuan GPUs.

I agree, I'm probably going to wait for a refresh. I want the next gen 7900GT, single slot and a majority of the power / features of the 8800 series.

Well, good luck finding a fan. But i think evga does sell some fans online on their site.
